Through the Lens: The Great Experiment

By Chuck Clegg - | Mar 12, 2025

Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, the leadership of our country set out on what some called the Great Experiment, Democracy. Then as now, there are those who say it would fail, and the collapse of freedom will be no more. A great many of the citizens of the new country no longer wanted the British King to dictate to them how to believe, how much taxes they had to pay and most of all having no voice in the direction of their lives.

There were also those in the new country who wanted to remain subjects of the King. They felt safe and secure in his ability to be fair in his role. The King saw the new country as a child and upstart who simply wanted to rebel against his leadership. He believed he could wave his hand and proclaim his wishes to his subjects in the new land would follow without question. We know that history tells another story.

America is now divided in its beliefs as to how to move forward. There are those who say things are not perfect, but they will be fine. Others proclaim the sky is falling and will pull down every social program that we enjoy along with our Democracy. If that comes to pass, next year on the 4th of July, our 250th birthday, there may be no celebration because the great experiment failed.

President Trump has never lost. At least in his mind he has never failed at anything he has ever done. And he has not failed in his own personal estimation. There are those whom he has done business with that strongly believe that is untrue. He can defer any failure to those around him. Does that make him a shrewd businessperson, or simply a bully who gets his way. That is for history to decide.

Tomorrow’s historians will write that history. Final judgement of his leadership and as a person is for others to determine. The next four years will be different, than any other four years before his Presidency. Love him or hate him, you must acknowledge he has taken our constitutional balance of government and thrown it out the door. With a stroke of his pen, he issues executive orders. King’s issue proclamation and decrees to consolidate their control. No difference except in name.

On Tuesday of last week, President Trump wanted the opportunity to speak to congress. It did not take long until the gathering became one side against the other. The Democrats with their signs and outburst were out of place. But just as equally wrong was the boos and name calling from the other side.

Remember how the British Kings ruled, they used Parliament to debate the issues. The gathering of legislatures divided on each side, called and booed while shaking their fist at their opposition. They are governed by threats of power over the other side. In many ways, then as now, it is part of the tactics within their country. Have we arrived at a point in history where we are returning to British style rule? Is that what we witnessed last week? I was disappointed in both sides.

Politicians have been described as political theater. On stage each actor knows their role in the performance. Somehow that has now changed. There are those on both sides who believe they are no longer actors in this great drama called Democracy. They are stars playing themselves. That makes the story a Greek tragedy or Shakespearian drama. We know how they turned out. “Alas poor Al Green, I knew him well when he was a democrat.”

Even more than being disappointed, I saw in that chamber not elected legislators, I saw elected officials who genuinely dislike the opposition party members. A president who shamed those who do not share his views. I also saw Democrats who sat stone faced and did not acknowledge those recognized by the President. Each Presidential guest deserves to be recognized by all legislators that represent you.

After the name calling and booing and Presidential scolding of the Democrats, did it make things better for you and your family? Did the price of eggs go down, or did the price you pay at the pump drop? Has the amount you have in your 401K or retirement account increased?

President Trump boasted that his new department of efficiency has rooted out billions in unnecessary spending programs that will make a tiny, tiny dent in our national debt. He told us we have begun to be safer because of the southern border being closed. No doubt this will stop the undesirables from coming into our country. He has removed regulations and imposed tariffs. He boasts, “This is the Golden Age of America.” I truly hope he is right.

Since the turn of the 20th century, America has been a shining light in the world. Lady Liberty holds high her torch in New York Harbor, the hope for something better in America. Has the glow from her light diminished? I do know that it cost five million dollars today to pass through the torch’s glow.

America has become bloated and strained by it wanting to support Democracy around the world. Has the weight of our own democracy become too much? Today we realize President Trump is changing our democracy to fit his singular government style. With the majority legislative branch willing to give up their portion of government and the judicial system beholding to a singular President. And the leaders of our military being hand selected to help him full fill his mission of singular control. But let us not forget, our Sovereign President is giving the majority of people in America what they wanted and voted for. A singular controlled government with a Sovereign President, a Vice President as Lord High Marshall and with an appointed Prime Minister, Elon Musk’s new visions of America Through the Lens. Citizenship cards are on sale in the lobby for $5 million.
