Wildcats Fall Short To Montcalm

Paden City made the long four and a half hour trip to Mercer County on Wednesday, February 3, to battle the Generals of Montcalm high school in a boys high school basketball game. The Wildcats were looking to improve on a 4-6 record but Montcalm had their own ideas and edged out the Wildcats 47-43 in a tight contest to improve to 3-9 on the year while Paden City dropped to 4-7.

The Cats came out in the first quarter and took a 13-8 lead on the strength of senior Brandon Hizer’s 12 first quarter points. However the second quarter was nearly reversed with the Generals outscoring the Cats 12-8 to go into the locker room at the half down 21-20 to the Wildcats. Paden City gained another point on the Generals in the third frame and led by two 30-28 with eight minutes to play.

The Wildcats had foul problems in the fourth quarter and the home team took advantage, by out scoring the Wildcats 18-12 to pick up the win. Paden City who only has eight players on the roster lost two starters to fouls in the frame and sent the Generals to the free throw line eight times in the frame which made the difference. Overall the home squad went to the line 21 times making 11, while the Cats got just nine tries sinking seven.

Paden City had the games top scorer as Hizer had the hot hand and hit for 31 points while grabbing seven rebounds, adding four steals and getting two blocks in an all-around good performance. Guard Mickey Guerra hit for eight points including a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Shane Anderson cleared the boards for 12 rebounds and hit 2-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore Joey Baker grabbed six rebounds, had seven assists, two steals and two blocks.

The Generals Noah White connected for 30 points including four 3-pointers, while going 10-12 from the charity stripe. Kobie Neal added six points for the home team.

Paden City falls short at Wood County Christian

The Wildcats traveled to Williamstown on Tuesday night, February 1, to do battle with the Wildcats of Wood County. One thing was sure, the Wildcats were going to win. Paden City looking for a victory came up short however dropping a close 36-29 to the home team.

Leading the way for the visiting Wildcats was Brandon Hizer who earned the games leading scorer with a 16 point outburst including 2-2 from the free throw line. Paden City found the going tough in the first quarter as they got out to a slow start hitting for only two points. However they were still in the game as the home team Wildcats could only sink eight giving them a six point lead 8-2 after one quarter.

In the second frame Wood County hit for 11 points and Paden City countered with nine to make it 19-11 at halftime. The visiting Wildcats tied things up at the end of three quarters outscoring the home squad 10-2 in the period to make it 21-21 with eight minutes to play. Wood County gained the edge in the final eight minutes winning the quarter 15-8 to pick up the win.

For Paden City Shane Anderson added six pointsm while Iasiah Thomas hit a three pointer, Joey Baker and Mickey Guerra each added a basket. Paden City had 13 field goals and went 2-3 from the charity stripe.

Wood County Christian hit just 11 from the floor but got the win at the free throw line where they canned 9-19 attenpts. Cline led the home team with a team high 12 points, while Laham hit for nine markers and Evland canned five. Castillo and J. Christman each added three and E. Christman hit for two.
