Silver Knight Golfers Have a Light Week

Landen Miller Lines up a Shot During a Recent Match

The Tyler Consolidated High School and Middle School Golf Teams each played only one match last week, as rain washed out a planned middle school match.

The TCHS Golf Team traveled to the St. Marys course on Monday, September 13, to take on two opponents. Team scores were: St. Marys – 148; Ritchie – 164; and Tyler – 179.

Individual results for the Knights were: Mason Nichols – 40; Chandler Ash – 42; Landen Miller – 45; Luke Deaton – 52; Colby Nichols – 55; Trenton Webster – 57; Cooper Clayton – 61; and Cole Moore – 63.

Coach Joe Griffith was looking for some lower scores as the season begins to wind down: “We were hoping to have several scores in the 30s on the Par-32 course, but that didn’t happen. St. Marys and Ritchie both have tough teams this year.”

Chandler Ash, sophomore, finished with the second lowest round for the Knights, and he attributed his improved score to his club selection. “At St. Marys, I went back to my old driver, and that seemed to drop some strokes off my score. I’m hoping that that improvement stays with me for the rest of the season!”

Trenton Webster, freshman, noted that he felt “…backwards the whole match. I have golfed at St. Marys a number of times, but this time it seemed that the holes I usually do great on, I had a rough time, while on the holes I would normally have a rough time with, I did well.”

Fellow freshman, Colby Nichols, said that in spite of a couple of bad holes, “It’s a fun course to play.”

The match dropped the TCHS record to 14-39 on the season. This past Monday five members of the team traveled to the Mingo Bottom Course near Elizabeth, WV, to participate in the LKC Tournament. Today they are hosting Magnolia and Paden City in the annual Parents/Senior Night match, with a dinner to follow.

Tomorrow the TCHS team will travel to the Worthington Golf Course to take on Parkersburg Catholic and four other LKC teams. Tuesday, September 28, the team will finish the regular season as they compete in the Regional Tournament at Mingo Bottom Golf Course.

The middle school golfers also traveled to the St. Marys course, this time on Tuesday, September 14, to match up with several teams from the Wood County Middle School Golf League. The team went 1-2 on the evening. Team scores were: Pleasants County Middle – 201; Blennerhassett Middle – 204; Tyler Middle – 231; and Belpre Middle – 253.

For the TCMS Knights, John Mace led the way with his round of 51, with Aiden Smith also finishing in the 50s, with a score of 58. Other Knight scores were: Morgan Fisher – 60; Chase Camerlin – 62; Jackson Smith – 63; Will Northcraft – 64 and Dane Nelson – 64.

Morgan Fisher was mostly pleased with her round. “I tried my hardest and succeeded, for it was my best match at St. Marys so far. Next time, I will work on the angle of my club face so that I can cut a few strokes off my score.”

“We continue to see progress in the young golfers every week,” said Coach David Tucker. “They are making better shots and their scores are coming down.”

The Middle School team was set to host four other teams on Wednesday, September 15, but rain postponed the match for two weeks, until September 29. Yesterday, they traveled to Golf Club of West Virginia to take on Parkersburg Catholic and Marietta St. Marys.

The record for the TCMS team now stands at 2-4. They have two remaining matches, including the home make-up match on September 29, along with a middle school tournament to finish off the season at the Wheeling Park Golf Course on September 30.
