Wildcats Nip Eagles, 4-3
Paden City senior Luke Cooper pitched 5 1/3 innings and got the win from the mound as the Wildcats defeated the Magnolia Blue Eagles 4-3 on April 13 at George Mullet Baseball Field in New Martinsville.
In the top of the first, Hayden Hizer reached to start the game. Cooper doubled with one out to score Hizer. Cooper later came around to score, as the Wildcats chased Eagles’ starter Derrick Blain in the middle of the inning. Tanner McAdams came into pitch and struck out two Paden City batters to close out the top half of the inning leaving the bases loaded.
Cooper shut down the first two batters, then Blain walked and Nick Priem was hit by a pitch. Cooper then buckled down and struck out the next batter to end the inning.
To start the top of the second, Hizer walked with one out then Aaron Healsey flew out. Cooper was then intentionally walked, putting Michael Wilcox at the plate. Hizer then scored on a wild pitch Wilcox flew out to close out the second for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead into the third after the Eagles came up empty in the bottom of the second.
McAdams got out of the third by getting two strikeouts and then inducing a ground out. In the bottom of the third, Tyler Anderson doubled followed by a Blain single Priem hit into a double play but Anderson managed to score. Cooper then set down the next batter and after three the score stood at 3-1 Wildcats.
Neither team was able to score in the fourth, fifth or sixth, but the Wildcats plated one in the seventh when Evan Cross reached first on a throwing error after a hard shot to third. Kolton Elliot. who had earlier walked, came home on the two-out error, giving the Wildcats a 4-2 lead going into the Eagles final at bat. The Blue Eagles added a run in the inning but Hizer struck out Zach Haught to end the inning and give the Wildcats the win. The Wildcats improved to 8-6 while the Blue Eagles fell to 4-3 on the season.
