Good Things Happening In Wetzel, Tyler

By Staff | Feb 16, 2022

The recent announcement that Memorial Health Systems of Marietta wants to build a new hospital in Sistersville, with Satellite Clinics in Middlebourne, Paden City and St. Marys is fabulous news for local resident. Not only should it provide jobs and enhance our local economy, it also brings with it better health care facilities, and a higher quality of care to follow.

Wetzel County has top of the line health care at WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital and word is they would also like to provide clinic space in Paden City. Our local communities are in support of the health care plans and the Tyler County Commission has also agreed to do their part. Let’s hope work can start soon to make this happen.

The Paden City Development Authority is working hard behind the scenes to cleanup some of their facilities and provide space for business to locate. They have recently announced their intentions of renovating a building on Main Street for a possible coffee shop/restaurant.

News came this past week from Covestro a local chemical facility just North of New Martinsville, that they will be hiring full time positions. Those will be good paying positions with benefits.

Gov. Jim Justice announced last week that revenue collections in West Virginia continue to make history – breaking several all-time state records in January. According to Justice, West Virginia’s General Revenue collections for January 2022 came in at $573.3 million – a whopping $136.8 million above estimate and 29.4% ahead of prior year receipts.

The $136.8 million surplus for the month of January is also believed by state revenue officials to be the highest January surplus ever recorded in state history.

“We continue to break all-time record after all-time record,” Gov. Justice said. “You won’t find anybody on the planet who is more proud to announce these incredible surplus numbers to you. And believe me, these numbers didn’t just happen by somebody rolling off the pickle truck. A lot of people put in a whole lot of work to make this vision of having surplus after surplus a reality.”

We are seeing the numbers on paper, and it looks like the economy in West Virginia is thriving. However with unemployment still high in many parts of the state, lets hope some of the surplus can reach our area and help with the hard work our local officials and communities are doing to make life better for so many.

Once again it should be noted that West Virginia Rt 2. between Paden City and Sistersville is a dangerous stretch of highway. With frequent slips from the hillside putting motorists at risk each day. Hopefully this can be addressed during the legislature session. It has been brought to the attention of our state representatives several times over the past few years. Let’s praise the good work on the economy and jobs and not be afraid to voice our concerns with the danger of Rt. 2 which has fallen on deaf ears so often!
