Howard Stubbs
On November 16, 1936, at the head of a Tyler County hollow, Earl and Garnet Stubbs gave birth to their sixth child, Howard. He grew up working the land on the family farm, developing a strong work ethic and love for the outdoors, often spending his spare time hunting the woods he called home.
After graduating from Tyler High School, duty called as Howard was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served his country. The work ethic he developed on the family farm followed him into the workforce, where he spent time timbering and working in a nearby rock quarry before beginning a long, fulfilling career with Equitable Gas. For over 30 years, he faithfully tended gas wells and storage sites. While he often reflected fondly on the stories and friendships that came from his work, his true pride was in the family he built and cherished.
Over the course of 61 years, Howard and his wife Nelda, built a life on their land in Shirley to include two daughters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. For those that loved him most, he will be remembered for his grit, wit and work ethic. The plain-spoken voice from the porch. Frugal, yet selfless. Straight-shooting yet soft.
