Tyler County BOE Holds Regular Meeting

The Tyler County Board of Education met on Monday, March 7, 2022, at 7 p.m. in the board office building in Middlebourne. Present for the meeting were Superintendent Shane Highley, President Linda Hoover, Vice President Katrina Byers, members Curtis Heintzman, Larry Thomas and Dave Roberts. A special highlight of the evening was the student projects on display throughout the hallways of the county office building. The projects were recently completed by students participating in the Tyler County Social Studies Fair. Several students were on hand to answer questions. President Hoover and Superintendent Highley thanked the students for being present and commented on what a commendable job everyone had done on their projects.

Under communication, Mr. Highley explained the changes proposed to the 2021-2022 school calendar. April 13,2022 will now be an SAT school day required for all 11th grade students to take the SAT test. April 14, 2022 will be designated as a professional learning day for teachers, meaning no school for students. April 19, 2022 will be set as an out of calendar day which will be added to spring break. Approval was given by a 5-0 vote as well as approval for the 2022-2023 school calendar.

Under the Superintendent’s report, Mr. Highley said that he spoke with the WV Dept. of Highways concerning the question of installing speed bumps on the road around the high school campus. At this time the department explained they cannot add speed bumps because it is a state road. At one time, there were speed bumps around the school, but because it is state road they were removed.

Also, the discussion of purchasing a county van was put on hold until it was time for new budgets. The board will re-visit the matter at that time.

The following policy reviews were approved by the Board of Education: EJ food service, free and reduced; student dress code; use of bodybuilding dietary supplements; weapons and or explosive devices; drugs and/or alcohol; possession/use of tobacco products; assembly and petition; release of students to parent/custodian; student health services; supervision of students; student physical exams; student records/access, and student records/confidentiality.

The following trip requests were approved. Leann Smith and Hannah Roberts requested permission to take the fifth-grade class at SES to the Carnegie Science Center on May 5, 2022, with bus transportation. Judy Thoburn and Brenda Nichols requested permission to take the fourth grade at SES to Smart Centre Market; Elm Grove, WV; McDonald’s and Wheeling Park on May 5, 2022.

Matt Jennings requested permission to take the TCMS/HS bands to the West Virginia Bandmasters Association State Band Festival on April 5th and 6th. Mr. Jennings also requested permission to take the TCHS concert and jazz bands to participate in the Music in the Parks Band Festival at Norwin High School in North Huntingdon, PA on May 14, 2022. The students will spend the rest the afternoon at Kennywood Amusement Park. All trip requests for Mr. Jennings students were approved by the board.

Shelby Williams and Tristin Boso requested permission for the cheerleaders to host a pageant on April 3, 2022. The pageant will for children three-years-old and up to the sixth grade. The group is seeking use of the concession stand, auditorium and restrooms. Permission was granted by the board.

Several requests for students to attend Tyler County schools were presented. Maria DeLong and Cameron Shepard requested permission for Danny McCune, III, to cross county lines to continue attending Tyler County schools for the remainder of the 2021/22 school year. Also, Jim and Corey Stover requested permission for Reagan, Riley and Jayden Stover to cross county lines to continue attending Tyler County schools for the 2021/22 school year. The requests were approved.

Jeff Davis requested permission for the 14U MYL Middle School Baseball, MOVBL to use the Tyler Consolidated High School baseball field when available from March 7, 2022, through June 30, 2022, for practices and games. The organization will be completely responsible for cleanup.

The Board also accepted the resignations by retirement from Barbara Bailey as English teacher at TCHS effective March 2, 2022. The board employed the following: Aleah Baker, Heather Jackson, Kelly Myer, and Katelyn Stewart as substitute classroom aides, effective immediately. Katelyn Stewart and Heather Fox as substitute cooks effective immediately. Tracey Bell, Josiah Burgess and Timothy Spencer as substitute custodians, effective immediately. Brandy Glover-Frye as yearbook advisor at TCHS effective immediately.

Following the completion of the agenda items the meeting was adjourned. The next scheduled meeting of the Tyler County Board of Education will be held on Monday March 21, 2022, at 7 p.m. at Tyler County Board of Education Office located on Dodd Street in Middlebourne.
