Wetzel County Technical Center to Host Open House Feb. 6

Facility Offers Eight Different Programs for High School Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

The public is invited to learn more about the Wetzel County Technical Center, 2213 Mountaineer Highway, New Martinsville, during an open house slated from 3:30-6 p.m. Feb. 6.

“This event is an opportunity to explore our programs, meet our dedicated instructors and learn about the resources and career pathway we offer our students,” said James Kimble, director of the center, in a letter to community members.

“Whether you’re familiar with WCTEC or not, we welcome you to experience firsthand how we are shaping the future of technical education in Wetzel County.”

During the open house people can tour the facility; see demonstrations by students; receive information about enrollment, career opportunities and programs; and talk with faculty and staff.

There will also be snacks, giveaways and more.

“We hope you will join us for this exciting event and see how the Wetzel County Tech Center is empowering students with skills for success,” Kimble said.

The technical center opened in 2018 and is open to Wetzel County’s sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school. Seniors are given the option to spend the entire school day at the tech center in one of their chosen programs.

Program include:

Welding, which is a two-year program that teaches students “practical skills in joining metals using various techniques, preparing them for careers in manufacturing, construction and fabrication.”

Electrical, which is a two-year program that teaches students “foundational skills in electrical systems, troubleshooting and safety practices to prepare them for careers in the electrical trade.”

Drafting/design, which is a one-year program that teaches students “how to create technical drawings and digital designs using industry standard tools and software.”

TeachWV/Grown Your Own is a one to two year program that equips students “with the skills and knowledge necessary for teaching through hands-on training and classroom management techniques.”

Health Science, which is a 1-2 year program that focuses on “preparing students for careers in health care by teaching foundational medical knowledge, practical skills and hands-on experience.”

ProStart, a one-year program, provides students with “hands-on training and industry-recognized skills for careers in hospitality and food service.”

Graphic Design, a one-year program, teaches students “the fundamentals of visual communication, including typography, layout and digital design tools, to create impactful visual content.”

Baking & Pastry is a one-year program that provides students “with hands-on training in baking techniques, pastry arts and kitchen operation to prepare themselves for careers in the culinary field.”

Students also have the opportunity to earn college credits at West Virginia Northern Community College, Marshall University and Glenville State College.
