Golf Season in Full Swing at TCHS/TCMS

By Staff | Aug 15, 2025

The 2025 TCHS Knights sports season has begun, with the Knight Golf Team already playing in three events last week and several more this week.

There is a lot of interest in golf among TCHS and TCMS students, with 13 high school players out for the team this fall. The middle school team consists of 17 young golfers. Coach Joe Griffith commented on the high level of interest: “It is exciting to see so many young students out on the golf course! We have a total of 30 golfers between the HS and MS teams, which is up from last year’s total of 23. Kids love to play golf, and some of them have really worked at their game this summer. It looks to be a great season ahead.”

The TCHS golfers got the season started early, as they traveled to the North Bend Golf Course on Tuesday, August 5, to compete in the LKC Scramble. Eleven teams enjoyed the 18-hole event, which many of the young golfers find to be one of the most fun matches of the season.

The Knights A-Team finished at 8 under par, which tied them for sixth place overall, while the B-Team ended at 3 under par. This placed the B-Team third out of four B teams. Three teams tied for first place at 13 under par, with Doddridge taking the title in the playoff.

Playing for the A-Team were juniors John Mace and Morgan Fisher, along with sophomores Chase Camerlin and Xavier Kanz. The B-Team was comprised of juniors Aiden Smith and Coley Bell, along with freshmen Kaylin Eastham and Collin King.

Finishing places on the Par 72 course were: 59 = Doddridge, St. Marys, and Wirt (Doddridge won playoff); 61 = Williamstown; 62 = Gilmer and Ravenswood; 64 = TYLER A, Roane, and Webster A; 65 = Parkersburg Catholic; 66 = Ritchie A; 67 = Ritchie B; 68 = Doddridge B; 69 = Tyler B; 71 = Webster B.

New player, junior Coley Bell, said: “I had fun with my first golf match, and I’m working to get better throughout the season.”

“Year after year, the LKC Scramble continues to be just about everyone’s favorite event of the season,” said Coach Griffith. “It’s a great way to start the season without a lot of individual pressure especially for players new to the golf team.”

On Thursday, August 7, six of the TCHS golfers made the long trip south to the Roane Country Club to compete against six other teams. It was a good day for the local golfers, as they finished second out of seven varsity teams. Tyler has no seniors, while Doddridge has four seniors, and their team score showed that.

Team scores were: Doddridge – 308; TYLER – 363; Ritchie – 383; Roane – 388; South Harrison – 425; Parkersburg Catholic – 430; Calhoun – 463; and Roane B – 481.

For the Knights, John Mace’s round of 47/37=84 led the way, followed by solid rounds from Camerlin at 45/46=91 and Kanz with 44/47=91. Freshman Collin King had 56/41=97, and the two new juniors had Boggs with 54/54=108, and 60/54=114 from Coley Bell.

John Mace was mostly pleased with his game: “At our first match at Roane County, I think that I left some shots out there on my front nine. I was happy with my score of +1 on the back, though. A 6-1 team record on the day is a pretty good start, and I see a bright season ahead.”

New team member, Landon Boggs, was also pleased with his day: “For our first match I thought we played pretty well. There were a couple of tough holes that threw me off, but there were a lot of positives to look forward to for the season.”

Then on Friday, August 8, two TCHS girl golfers went to the St. Marys Golf Course to play in the St. Marys Girls Invitational. Out of 41 female golfers, Knight junior Morgan Fisher finished third overall, while freshman Kaylin Eastham finished tied for 9th position. Morgan made the All-Tournament Team with her round of 39/45=84. Eastham had 46/53=99.

Fisher commented on her round: “It was a great day to golf, and an even better start to the season!”

“I thought the girls played very well,” said Assistant Coach David Tucker. “It was a great first week of play, and we are looking for a lot of success throughout the season.”

The Varsity team’s record stands at 8-7-2 after the first week of the season. This past Monday, ten of the HS golfers traveled to Golf Club of West Virginia to take on Williamstown, Ravenswood, JM and PHS, while the middle school team opened their season by hosting Ohio County and Spencer Middle. Tuesday, four varsity players competed in the Callaway High School Series at the Speidel Jones course, site of the state tournament in October. Today, the JVs travel to Highland Springs near Wellsburg, WV, and tomorrow the MS team travels to Mingo Bottom. Rounding out the busy week, the two girls will have a match this Friday at Woodridge Golf Course, site of the WV State Girls Invitational Tournament the day after Labor Day.
