Valley Lumberjills Falls to Madonna in Volleyball
The Lumberjills of Valley high school traveled to Weirton on Thursday, August 27, to battle the Blue Dons of Madonna in girls high school volleyball action.
The Blue Dons took all three sets to win the match leaving the Lady Jills at 0-3 on the young season. Set on had a 9-9 tie before the Blue Dons rattled off a pair of points to take a short lead 11-9. Valley came right back and tied the set on a put back from Emma Wade and a serve from Carley Pittman. Madonna then went up 15-11, but Elynn Derby served up a point and Alanna Hendershot got two kills to make it 15-14, From there the home team went on a five point run to lead 20-14, and finished it off scoring five of the next 10 points for the set win.
Set two was much like set one with the teams trading points throughout the set. Valley knotted the score at 11, but the Blue Dons scored 14 of the next 20 points for a 25-17 win. The Lady Dons kept the pressure on in set three taking a 9-2 lead to start and then finished it off with a 16-9 run to get the win 25-11 and take the match in straight sets.
Leading the Lumberjills in the match was Emily Pittman with nine service points, including an ace. She added three kills and two digs. Elynn Derby had 11 digs and two service points, while Hendershot had three kills, two blocks, and three points from the service line. Wade added five points on serves and three kills, plus a block.
