TCMS Golfers at the Wood County Middle School Golf Blind Scramble

The Tyler Consolidated Middle and High School Knights Golf Teams both played matches last week as they come down to the final weeks of their seasons.

The high school golfers played one match last week, as they hosted Magnolia in a rare two-team match on Wednesday, September 8, at the Sistersville Country Club. The heavy rain from late morning and early afternoon cleared just in time for the match, and the Knights came away with the win. Team scores were: Tyler – 184; and Magnolia – 206.

For the Knights, junior Mason Nichols led all players on the evening, finishing with a round of five over par, 39, to give him medalist honors for the first time this season. Other Knight scores were: Landen Miller – 43; Chandler Ash – 46; Luke Deaton – 56; Colby Nichols – 56; Trenton Webster – 57; and Cooper Clayton – 62.

“Paden City and Frontier were originally scheduled to be part of this match,” said Knights Coach Joe Griffith. “But they have both joined a new league, and they had a league event. So it was nice to have a two-team match for a change.”

Nichols was pleased with his medalist round: “I played pretty well. I made a few adjustments to my swing the night before, and I think that really helped my score.”

Fellow junior, Landen Miller, was optimistic about the team’s performance as the end of the season nears: “I didn’t play too well against Magnolia, but Mason did a good job to be medallist, and I placed second. Hopefully I can do better next match.”

Freshman Trenton Webster was back out on the course after missing several matches. He reflected on the wet conditions for the match: “I felt like my drives were good this match. What hurt me was how wet the greens were. It was like putting through mud!”

The win improved the season record for the Knights to 14-37. This week they traveled to St. Marys on Monday, September 13, to take on St. Marys, Williamstown, and Ritchie. The other high school match scheduled for this week–at Riverside against Magnolia on Tuesday, September 14–has been cancelled since Magnolia has been on Remote Learning because of COVID numbers in Wetzel County. If the Blue Eagles are back in school by next Wednesday, September 22, there will be a match at the Sistersville Country Club featuring Magnolia, Tyler, and Paden City. No carts will be allowed, and the clubhouse will be closed because of COVID restrictions.

For the Tyler Middle School golfers, the first of two matches last week saw them travel to Marietta Country Club on Tuesday, September 7, to take on Marietta Middle and Blennerhassett Middle. Team scores were: Blennerhassett – 222; Marietta – 227; and Tyler – 251.

Seventh-grader, John Mace, set the standard for the Knights with his round of 58 on the Par-35 front nine at Marietta CC. Other Tyler Middle scores included: Morgan Fisher – 61; Chase Camerlin – 65; Aiden Smith – 67, Mason Clayton -70; and Jackson Smith – 70. Eli Davis, of Blennerhassett, was medalist with his round of 15 over par, 50.

“The course at Marietta was in much better condition than the last time I was down there,” said Coach David Tucker. “It was wet in spots, but for the most part that should not have affected the players’ shots.”

On Thursday, September 9, four members of the middle school team traveled to the Minibel Golf Center Par Three Course for the annual Wood County League Blind Draw Scramble. The Tyler Middle School team is not a member of the Wood County League, but each season they are invited to play in several matches and this scramble.

Each Tyler player was matched with players from three other schools in the scramble format event. It’s a good time to get to know players from other schools, and it’s a popular event with the young golfers.

Team scores ranged from 26, which was one under par on the Par-27 course, up to 37, or ten over par. For the Knights, Morgan Fisher’s team finished at two over par, the same score as the team where Mason Clayton played. The teams where John Mace and Chase Camerlin played both finished at seven over par, 34.

Sixth-grade golfer, Chase Camerlin, reflected on his first blind draw scramble: “In the scramble, I was glad to help my team. We may not have won, but we did our best!”

Following last week’s action, the season record for the middle school team stands at 1-2. Yesterday the team traveled to St. Marys to take on Pleasants, Belpre and Blennerhassett Middle Schools. Today, they host a match at Sistersville CC featuring Hamilton, Marietta, John Marshall and Ohio County Middle School teams. As noted above, spectators are advised that no carts will be allowed, and that the clubhouse will not be open for drinks or food, only for restrooms.
