Formula Three Champ Returns to New Martinsville
Toby Hood, McConnellstown, Pennsylvania, has entered the APBA sanctioned Championship powerboat races, September 25-26, in New Martinsville. Hood plans to defend his 2019 RegattaFest title as a final tribute to his stellar racing career. Hood is retiring from racing following the New Martinsville race. Winning his last racing event for the City of New Martinsville Cup will cap his string of victories, including the 2021 Formula Three National Championship recently held in Springfield, Ohio.
Other Formula Three participants expected to challenge Hood are Mark Welch, Wayzata, MN, Jeff and Jonah Gilbertson of Minneapolis, MN, and Mark Padfield of Kansas City, MO.
This 85-mph class was first raced in Charleston, SC, in 1989. Premiered by Powerboat Superleague, the F3/SST 60s have been a popular staple of the RegattaFest over the years. The straightaway world’s speed record for the class was set at the RegattaFest on 9/29/13 at 88.678 mph by Sammy Miller of Chicago, IL.
