TCHS Boys Baseball Begins Sectional Play

By Randy Rutherford - Sports Writer | Jun 9, 2021

Jayden Helmick Safe at Home

Tyler Consolidated improved their record 20-5 with an opening round Region One Section Two Sectional game defeating Ritchie County on June 1, by the score of 5-2. The Silver Knights gave up two runs in the top of the third inning but answered in the bottom of the third scoring three. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory. Ty Walton went the distance for the Knights surrendering eight hits while striking out eight. On the year Ty reached 100 strikeouts, which to my knowledge leads the state.

Defensively the Knights ended two potential rallies by the Rebels when Jayden Helmick threw out a runner trying to advance to third and a rocket to the plate for the third out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Both of these perfect throws came from deep in centerfield.

The Silver Knights were led in hitting by Jayden Helmick going one for three scoring one run and had one RBI, Mason Nichols going three for three scoring one run with one RBI, Ty Walton two for three, Owen Westbrook one for three and Weston Henderson two for two scoring one run with one RBI.

The Knights advance in the double elimination Sectional next facing Williamstown on Wednesday June 2.

Silver Knights Fall

to Williamstown

After defeating the Williamstown Yellow Jackets twice during the regular season in Tyler Consolidated Silver Knight’s Boys Baseball faced off for a third time versus the Jackets. Unfortunately for the Knights the third time was not a charm as they suffered an 11-7 defeat in the Region One Section Two Sectional tournament. Williamstown scored four runs in the top of the third inning and Tyler answered with three in the bottom of the third. In the back-and-forth battle Williamstown added three more runs in the top of the fourth but Tyler answered in the bottom of the fifth scoring four. The game was tied going into the seventh-inning when Williamstown scored four in the top of the seventh to take the win. Leading the hitting for the Knights was Jayden Helmick going one for three with one RBI, Zade Billings one for three 2 RBIs, Ty Walton two for four with one RBI and Hayden Brown two for three with two RBIs. Hayden Brown took the loss for the Knights going six innings allowing eight hits and 10 runs. The Silver Knights now fall into the losers bracket of the sectional tournament and will face off with Ritchie County.

TCHS Baseball Ends Season in Extra Inning Loss to Ritchie County

Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights Baseball season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the sectional tournament dropping a nine inning decision to Ritchie County by the score 13-9. TCHS pulled off a come back to remember trailing 9-4 in the bottom of the seventh-inning scoring five runs to tie and send the game to extra innings. Two innings later Ritchie County pushed across four runs and Tyler was unable to complete a second come back. The Knights were led by Jayden Helmick going three for four and scoring four runs, Zade Billings was one for two and scored one run, Mason Nichols one for four with two RBI’s, Ty Walton and Owen Westbrook each one for five. Hayden Brown was three for five scoring two runs, Tyler Farrell two for five with one RBI and Weston Henderson going two for four with two RBI’s. Jayden Helmick took the loss in relief of Carson Gorby in the eighth inning. The Silver Knights completed a great season with a final record of 20-7. They were one win away from setting a school record for wins. I saw almost all of their games and they can hold their heads high with the effort they gave Coaches Rob Jones, Vance Ash, Jordan Ash and Brian Ferrell. Tyler had no Seniors on this years roster and the younger kids had to grow up fast, which will benefit them in the coming years.
