River Pilots Capture 4th Annual Wooden Bat Tournament
On a beautiful spring Saturday at the lush new baseball facility of TCHS, the Matt Boggs Wooden Bat Classic offered a great day of baseball and an opportunity for the community to come together and remember one of the best baseball players to ever put on a Tyler Consolidated uniform.
These were the thoughts of Coach Rob Jones as his team was disappointed with the outcome of the tournament, but knew it was early in the season. “Coach Tim Blue and the River Pilots are all class and played great baseball to win the tournament,” said Coach Rob Jones.
Tyler Consolidated Boys Baseball opened the Boggs Wooden Bat Classic falling to Frontier by the score of 10 to 1. Tyler was held to six hits led by Ty Walton going 2 for 3 at the plate. Going into the top of the seventh-inning Tyler was down 3 to 1 but Frontier exploded for seven runs in the inning to take the win.
The second game of the tournament featured River Pilots vs Frontier with River coming out on top by the score of 10-0. Mark Martie pitched a one hitter on the day. Coach Blue elaborated, “I really want to thank Coach Rob Jones for inviting the River Pilots. We all enjoyed the day of baseball. Everybody had fun with the wood bats. It was a special day for me also, getting to see Coach Rob Jones coach. I umpired him when he was in high school.” Coach Blue went on to say he umpired high school baseball when Matt Boggs was in high school. He compared Matt to being like a rock behind the plate. “He was a great receiver. I developed a friendship with his dad, Rodney, but have not seen him for a number of years. Thanks to the Boggs family for sponsoring the tournament. It gave me an opportunity to see Rodney again. It was a great Saturday personally for me,” explained Coach Blue.
The final game of the day featured Tyler Consolidated against River. In a tight game all the way, River finally prevailed 9 to 8 to become the Boggs Wooden Bat Tournament Champion. Tyler was able to get two men on base in the 7th inning but was unable to get the key hit that would have provided them the victory.
