The Press Box for March 25

By Staff | Mar 25, 2020

I want to commend the Paden City high school boys baseball and football team athletes once again for their volunteer help in loading water during the last drinking water handout in Paden City. It was a great jesture and a great lesson learned on the part of the athletes and coaches.

Now that sports is almost certain to be totally cancelled for this school year, we need to encourage our local athletes and children to do whatever they can to stay in shape and improve on their skills.

When summer rolls around and the days get much longer, it’s a good time to hit the outdoors for as much activity as possible. Play sports all day long. In the meantime follow the rules. Workout at home if possible or go for a long walk or go jogging. Any kind of physical activity is better than none.

Lifting weights, hitting a speed bag or heavybag will do wonders for conditioning. Unless we get put on lockdown I would also suggest taking up fishing. The weather is starting to warm up and the fish will be biting. Keep your distance from other fisherman and hit the banks, a good way to pass the time.

Jasob Spragg of Paden City was named to the OVAC All-Conference Wrestling team. Congratulations.

It sure would be nice if the little leagues get to play this year. Doesn’t look favorable, but keep your fingers crossed, it’s always a great time of year when the kids get to have their parade and opening day.

If you’ve ever watched some of the little ones in competition, it can be quite entertaining. I remember several years back during a T-Ball game when a boy hit one into centerfield, he made it all the way home as no center fielder could be found. They then noticed the center fielder over on the sliding board at the playground. He somehow slipped away without being noticed. Another kid who was playing first walked off the field just as the batter hit one in his direction. He was hollaring to his mom for a drink of water.

Then there have been those very serious moments, when the game was close and parents and grandparents were cheering like it’s the World Series. Those things make the games special.

Tyler Consolidated is working on a whole new sports complex, once it’s completed it is expected to be a state-of-the-art facility. Hopefully completion of the project will not be delayed and it will be ready in time for fall sports.

I watched a 1996 basketball game on you tube the other night. The Lakers and Bulls, man what a game.

There are still some outside activities we can do. Get your yard work done. Clean in front of your homes, tidy things up a bit and make it look better for everyone. It won’t be long until we get through this virus emergency. You can bet by then everyone will have a good idea what home confinement is like. In the meantime listen carefully and adhere to what the officials have put in place. Continue to sanitize and wash your hands. We can all do our part to make this go away quickly.
