Wildcats Looking for Success in ’20
Coach Croasmun has been coaching for 32 years, and last year led the Wildcats to a 16-14 record. This year he will be assisted by Jay Slider, who has tons of experience with kids in the youth league, and will get an opportunity at the Varsity level for the first time. Lost from last season to graduation are Trey Slider, a four year player, Matt Saxon a three year player, Jordan Stackpole three year player and Ryan Cross a four year player.
Returning lettermen for the Cats are senior, three year starter Clayton Thomas, senior, three year starter Brad Baker, sophomore , one year starter Alec Chaplin, and sophomore, one year starter Brandon Hizer.
Probable starters for the Wildcats will be Hunter Fulks (Catcher), Brad Baker (1st base), Will McGinnis (2B/SS/C/P), Clayton Thomas (SS/2B/3B/P), Hunter Fletcher (3B/OF), Alec Chaplin (SS/3B/C/P), Tobin McEldowney (CF/P), Brandon Hizer (LF/P), Right Field will be shared by Dustin Southerly, Scott Lavoie, and Liam Clements.
“We lost four key players from last’s year’s team. We only have two seniors and two juniors. We are very young and inexperienced. However, we do have some players with good baseball skills that will get better with experience,” said Coach Croasmun.
“With only 11 players on the roster they are getting lots of reps in practice and will get better each game.” Our motto right now is “be better today than you were tomorrow.”
Croasmun said they will be counting heavily on their two seniors, Thomas and Baker to lead the younger players. Both have been staters since their freshmen year and have lots of game experience. Thomas will be the main pitcher and rotate between SS and 2B. He will also be the cleanup hitter as he has good power. Baker is moving from left field to play 1B.
“We have three guys who are capable of playing catcher, Chaplin, McGinnis, and Fulks. Fulks is the starter right now and is showing signs of becoming a good catcher,” Croasmun said. He said all three are also working at pitching, while Chaplin and McGinnis can play SS,2B, and 3B.
“They both are fundamentally sound and are going to be good baseball players. All these guys are great kids and have been working very hard to get better. That’s all I can ask of them. We will show up each game and play hard. They are a work in progress and will be great competitors.”
The Wildcats 2020 season gets underway on Friday March 20, with a 5 p.m. away game at Morgantown Trinity. They will head to Parkersburg Catholic on Saturday, March 21, with a 1 p.m. start. The first home appearance for the Cats will be on Monday, March 23, as they host Ritchie County. Look for the young Wildcats to have some early season success and midway through the season to be a tough matchup for opposing teams.
