Cross, Helmick, Weber Named Athlets of the Week
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for October 30, 2019 are Paden City Volleyball Player Hope Weber, Wildcats Ethan Cross and Tyler Consolidated’s Jayden Helmick.
Weber the Wildcats big hitter helped shut down Magnolia for the second time this year. During their match on Tuesday, October 22, Weber finished the night with 24 kills, 11 assists, eight points and 12 digs. On the same night she helped the Wildcats to a two set win over Class AAA John Marshall with 18 kills, three points, seven digs and two blocks.
Tyler Consolidated freshman Jayden Helmick also earned his spot this week with his performance over Magnolia as the Silver Knights moved to 5-3 with a convincing 61-12 win over their arch rivals. Helmick was spectacular as he rushed for two touchdowns and scored another on a pass reception while adding one more with an interception return. All told he combined for four scores picking up 95 yards rushing on only four carries. He caught one pass for 34 yards an a score and returned the intercepton 44 yards.
Paden City’ s Ethan Cross was a one man scoring machine on Friday as he accounted for 52 points by passing for five touchdowns, running for two more and adding six point after kicks and a two point conversion toss. The senior quarterback was also a stalwart on defense where he recorded five tackles. Cross is a leader and works hard getting his teammates involved. He uses his natural ability and keeps the defense at bay with a combination of hard dashing runs and accurate passes.
