Doddridge County Tops Tyler, 42-28
The states number two ranked Class A team Doddridge County found itself in a shootout on Friday night at Tyler Consolidated high, but came away with a hard fought 42-28 win school as the Bulldogs and Silver Knights put on an a show for the crowd. With two of the states top running backs going head to head the offense of both teams controlled the game with neither team forcing a punt in the first half.
Mark Rucker scored twice for the Knights and racked up 219 yards on 33 carries but Doddridge running back Hunter America came to play as well and burnt the Knights defense for 240 yards and two scores on 28 carries. Rucker also tacked on two conversion runs.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first period when they fumble on the 1-yard line and recovered it in the end zone for a score. They added the coversion kick and with 6:47 to play it was Dodridge 7-0. The Silver Knights took the kickoff and put together a 16 play drive that ended with :29 seconds to play in the first quarter as Rucker ran off tackle for 5-yards and a score to make it 8-7 Knights after his conversion run to end the quarter.
On their first drive of the second period America put the Bulldogs back on top with a 3-yard run on fourth down and they went on top 14-8.
The Silver Knights however wasted little time in tying the game as they quickly drove down field on the back of Rucker runs of 27 and 19 yards. On a fourth and goal Knights senior quarterback Gage Huffman faked the handoff and kept the ball to cross the goal line a 3-yard T.D. with 5:51 left on the first half clock.
The Bulldogs took just a 1:36 to answer back as they rode the heals of America and Reese Burnside who finished the night with 93 yards and three scores on just seven carries.
He took the ball on a reverse handoff and scooted down the sideline for 32 yards untouched to give his team the lead. The successful point after attempt made it 21-14.
With 4:16 still left before the break Tyler showed they weren’t finished yet as they drove down field and before Huffman connected with David Throckmorton for an 18-yard scoring strike to put the Knights back in the lead 22-21after Rucker tacked on another conversion run with 1:23 left.
That’s when America came up big with runs of 32, 22, and 9 yards followed by a 2-yard T.D. run with only :37 to play making the score 28-22 at the half. In the first half the first four scores all came on fourth down plays and the only drive without a score wa Tyler’s last posession before the half with :37 seconds on the clock.
“That last drive was big. It gave us the lead going into halftime and we knew we were kicking to them but that was big because we only had a minute,” coach Bobby Burnside said.
After the break the Knights were forced to punt wich opened the door for the Bulldogs to give Burnside another score as he booted down the side for 19 yards to increase the lead to 35-22 with 9:24 left in the third. Rucker drew the Knights back into contention with a nice run with 4:01 to play in the third, but the conversion run failed an the score was 35-28. Burnside closed the scoring for the night with a six yard run right before the end of the third, the kick was good for the final outcome.
Both teams suffered through penalties and turnovers in the final quarter. For the game the Silver Knights had 20 first downs while Doddridge picked up 21. Tyler was penalized 5 times for 25 yards while the visitors suffered 4 penalties for 40 yards. The Knights lost the ball once on a fumble, while Doddridge lost 2-3 fumbles.
Huffman connected on 8-19 paasses for 56 yards and a T.D. and an interception. Rucker was 0-1 with an interception. Rucker caught 6-passes for 24 yards while Strode caught a 14-yard pass and Throckmorton grabbed the 18-yard scoring strike.
The Silver Knights are idle this week but return to Knights stadium on the 20th as they take on Calhoun County in a 7 p.m. matchup.
