Phillips Named Top Athlete
The Tyler Star News Athlete of the year for 2019 is Griffin Phillips of Tyler Consolidated High School. Phillips has done just about everything for the Silver Knights since his freshman year. Phillips graduated this past week to finish his career at Tyler, but he left a mark for younger kids to reach for.
He was a four year basketball player and four year football player for the Knights and received All-State recognizion in both sports. Phillips ended his basketball career with over 1,200 points and his football career as one of the best quarterbacks in school history and was a threat running the ball and throwing with nearly 1,000 yards in each his senior year. Griffin was also the punter and place kicker for the Knights.
This season he was a member of the Silver Knights track team running the sprints and relays and made it to Charleston where he was a member of the Knights Silver Medal 4×100 team. Phillips made first team All-LKC in both football and Basketball the past two seasons and was selected to play in several All-Star games including the upcoming North-South game .
“Giffin’s is as good as athlete as we’ve had here at Tyler Consolidated for a long time.” said Knights head football coach and A.D. Ryan Walton. “He was a joy to coach and would do everything asked of him. The younger kids looked up to him as a leader and he filled that role well, he will definitely be had to replace.”
The Tyler Star News has chosen Phillips on several ocassions as the athlete of the week and it was a clear choice that we choose him as the Athlete of the Year for 2018-2019. We wish him the best in all his future endeavors.
