TC’s Corley Captures State Gold, Earns AOW Honors

By Staff | May 22, 2019

Tyler Consolidated’s Spencer Corley wins the gold medal in the high jump at the West Virginia Class A State Track & Field Championships at Laidley Field in Charleston.

The Tyler Star News Athlete of the Week for May 22, 2019, is Tyler Consolidated sophomore high jumper Spencer Corley. Corley is a hard working, dedicated athlete who is not only one of the better cross country runers in Class A/AA.

He is also a top middle distant runner for the Knights.

His specialty however is his backwards flop over the high jump bar which he has mastered to perfection.

Late last season he picked up on the technique and was favored to win at the 2018 state meet but faultered which lit a fire under him to not let that happen again.

At the state meet this past Saturday he proved he was up to the task as he blew away the field with a 6-4.00 gold medal winning jump to set the bar for next year. His nearest competitior fell out at 5-10.00.

If the competiton had been tougher you may have seen a 6-7 or 6-8. Believe me it’s coming!
