Madonna Blanks PC in OVAC Semifinal
Second seed Paden City hosted Weirton Madonna on Monday, April 22, for a berth in the OVAC championships to be held later in the week. The Cat’s had defeated the Blue Dons earlier in the season and was hoping for a repeat.
Madonna however took advantage of Wildcat miscues and cruised to a 5-0 win over 12-11 Paden City. Trey Slider the Cat’s dandy lefty threw five somplete innings striking out eight batters along the way but suffered the loss. Matt Saxon came on in relief in the sixth and got two strike outs.
The Cat’s out hit the Blue Dons 5-4 but seven errors cost them the game while the visitors never committed an error and ended with all five unearned runs.
Slider added two singles in the game while Carson Palmer hit for a double.
Paden City got back on the win track on Wednesday, April 24, at Clay Battelle with a big five inning mercy rule 16-3 win. Clayton Thomas was the winning pitcher throwing nine strike outs and walking only three for a complete game win.
The home standing Cee-Bees drew first blood with two runs in the bottom of the second, but the Wildcats recovered in the top of the third with a five run inning to go up 5-2. Clay Battelle failed to score in the third and fourth. The Wildcats used the fifth inning to pull away for the win by crossing the plate for 11 runs on six hits in the inning.
The home team Cee-Bees added a run in the bottom of the fifth but it was not enough and the Cat’s evened their record at 12-12- with two regular season games to go before the May 6, sectionals start.
“I’m proud of the way these guys came back from last nights loss. This is a great group of kids who want to win and play hard every time out. We have some young kids on the team and they are working hard to be better ball players. They give their all and I can’t ask for any more than that, ” said coach Brent Croasmun.
