Calhoun Sweeps Silver Knights in Doubleheader
Calhoun County jumped all over Tyler Consolidated in game one of an April 5 double header, winning 18-1 in three innings. Briann Templeton was the losing pitcher for Tyler, giving up 12 hits over the three innings. The visitors scored five in the first inning and five in the second inning, before putting the game out of reach in the third with eight more.
The Silver Knights committed nine errors in the game to contribute to the visitors’ success. Templeton struck out two batters and issued three walks.
The Knights only had two hits in the game with JoLee Walton knocking in the only run with a single, and Templeton cracking a double.
Game two for the Knights was a good one with Tyler leading 2-1 for four innings before the visitors countered with two runs in the top of the fifth, to go up 3-2 for the final score.
The Silver Knights failed to plate any runs after the first inning and again were plagued by errors, committing five for the game. Madison DeVaughn suffered the loss on the mound for the Knights with four strike outs and four walks.
Allie Miller hit two singles and knocked in a run for the Silver Knights, while Briann Templeton singled and brought home a run. The loss dropped Tyler to 3-8 on the season.
Knights Drop Two to Buffalo
Tyler dropped a double header to Buffalo High School April 5 at home, 9-1 and 14-3. In the 9-1 game the Knights could only come up with three hits, all singles, while the visitors knocked four balls over the fence for round trippers, and added three single and three double for 10 hits and nine runs.
Tyler got its only run when Madison DeVaughn singled, followed by a single by Summer Miller, and a sacrifice ground ball from Briann Templeton in the bottom of the second inning.
Buffalo got a run in the top of the first and added three in the second, four in the fourth and one in the fifth for the win. DeVaughn was the losing pitcher for the Silver Knights.
The Knights committed three errors, while Buffalo played error free.
In game two JoLee Walton took the mound and was credited with the loss, as the visitors scored four first-inning runs and added four more in the second, for a 8-1 advantage after two innings.
The Knights’ Hannah Jackson walked in the first inning, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice by Shiann Jones. Summer Miller cracked a double in the second inning, and Allie Miller added a run in the third.
After walking she moved to second on a Briann Templeton single and advanced to third on a passed ball; she then scored on a sacrifice fly by Summer Miller. The Knights’ other run came in the fourth after a DeVaughn triple and a sacrifice bunt from Allie Miller.
The Silver Knights had four hits on the day, scored one run and had one error.
Buffalo added a run in the fifth and scored five more in the sixth to get the win. They had 17 hits in the innings for their 14 runs, and committed two errors.
Tyler Girls Earn Win Against Williamstown
Tyler Consolidated dropped the first game of a double header to the Yellowjackets, April 4 in Williamstown, but came back in game two to grab a 5-4 win. Williamstown scored six runs in the first inning in game one on their way to an 18-10 victory.
The Knights found themselves down 12-7 after three innings, but the Yellowjackets scored in every inning – including four in the sixth – to put it away. JoLee Walton suffered the loss for the Silver Knights as she threw five innings, striking out four and giving up eight walks. Taylor Ebert came on in relief in the sixth and walked four batters before the inning ended.
The Knights’ Maddie DeVaughn had a bIg night at the plate, going 4-5, while Allie Miller was 3-4 and knocked in three runs. Cheyenne Jones had two hits in three at bats. The Knights had 12 hits in the game but committed eight errors. Alyana Hancock got the win for Williamstown and was also 2-3 at the plate. Alexis Schreckengost went 3-4 with a double.
Game two was nip and tug throughout the first six innings with the Yellowjackets gaining a one-run lead after the second and carrying it to the seventh when they added another for a 3-1 lead going into the Knights’ last at bat. Tyler Consolidated came to life in the seventh and scored three times to get the 4-3 win.
Madison DeVaughn picked up the win, going the distance while striking out two batters and walking four. Both teams had eight hits in the contest, but the Knights continued to struggle with errors – getting five to Williamstown’s one. Allie Miller had another good game at the plate – getting two hits in three at bats, including a double. Sadie Nichols also cracked a double, and Brianna Templeton got a double and an RBI.
The Silver Knights moved to 3-4 with the win.
