Tyler Consolidated moved to 2-0 on the season Friday, on the home field, as the Silver Knights took care of business with an easy 10-0 mercy-rule win over hapless Pine Grove’s Valley. Junior three-sport star Gage Huffman took the mound in his first-ever start for the Silver Knights and shut down the Lumberjacks with a 14 strikeout, no-hit performance.

Huffman was in complete control, walking only one and facing only 16 batters. He also helped his cause by going 1-2 from the plate and knocking in a run. Senior third baseman Tyler West cracked a double that plated two runs, and Noah Smith went 1-2 and knocked in a pair of runs. Dylan Seckman also knocked in a run for the Knights.

The Silver Knights scored in every inning but the fourth as they got two runs in the first, three in the second, three in the third and added two more in the fifth to end the game. The Knights only had three hits in the contest and committed one error, but it was all they needed as Huffman fought off the cold and wet weather to give a sparkling performance.

“Gage Huffman no-hit Valley tonight. He kept them off balance and stayed ahead in the count. He attacked the zone well and stayed in rhythm all night. He was able to accomplish the five-inning no-hitter with 66 pitches. Valley had two base runners all night – walked batter and an error on a ground ball, both in the fifth inning,” said Coach Robby Jones. “We are happy to start the season 2-0, but we know we have plenty to work on to compete in a very tough conference and one of the toughest sectionals in the state.”
