Huffman, Corley Capture Weekly Honors
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for March 27, 2019 are Silver Knights junior baseball player Gage Huffman and sophomore trackster Spencer Corley.
The Silver Knights Baseball team braved the cold and damp weather March 22 at home and came away with a 10-0 win over the Valley Lumberjacks. The highlight of the game, however, was the outstanding pitching performance by junior Gage Huffman. Huffman made his first-ever pitching start for the Silver Knights a memorable one, as he struck out 14 batters and faced just 16. He was one strikeout away from a perfect game in tossing his no-hitter, which included just one walk. Huffman, who is a three-sports star for the Knights, can play about any position on the field and is a good infielder. It might be that he will now spend more time on the mound. Congratulations on a fine performance by Gage on Friday.
Spencer Corley had another stand-out performance last week as he showed the field how to clear the bar at the Ritchie County Invitational, with a personal best 6’4” jump to claim first place. His previous best had been 6,’ but with a lot of practice and hard work over the summer, he has increased his skill to another level. On March 22, in a six-hour meet at Parkersburg, he fought off the freezing temperatures and wind to, again, get a first-place win in the high jump while competing in the mostly AAA meet. While winning in his first two meets of the year, he has set a mark on his back that most will be shooting for. They better take perfect aim, because he will keep moving the target. He is also running the 400 relays, and the open 1600. Every good athlete knows endurance is a key to greatness. Keep up the good work.
