Paden City opened its 2019 high school baseball season March 16 at home against the Wirt Tigers, and came away with a 10-6 win in a contest that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Playing in low 40-degree weather with a sharp wind could have taken the sails out of either team, but both hung tough through the seven-inning contest.

The Wildcats looked like they would make short order of the Tigers, with returning senior ace Trey Slider on the mound. Slider held the visitors scoreless for the first three innings before the Tigers got a run in the top of the fourth. Paden City had taken a 2-0 lead after one and added one in the second and two more in the third and fourth for a 9-1 lead.

Senior Matt Saxon came on in relief for Slider in the fifth, and the Tigers loaded the bases. That’s when Hunter Hickman got ahold of one, sending it over the fence to clear the bases and draw the visitors to within 9-5. Paden City picked up another run in the bottom of the inning for a 10-5 lead, and then Saxon shut the visitors down in the sixth and seventh. Slider picked up the win, getting five strikeouts and issuing three walks. Saxon got the save, striking out three and walking two.

The ‘Cats got six hits and had two errors in the field. Saxon had two singles and added a double while scoring a run; Ryan Cross added two singles and knocked in three runs. Slider and Jordan Stackpole each were credited with an RBI.
