The Wildcats made the trip cross-county to take on the Hornets Friday night and came away with a 69-60 victory. The meeting was the third this season between the two schools with each having a win on their own floor thus far. During Friday’s meeting, Paden City took advantage of some hot first-quarter shooting from the outside, to open up the middle for some easy baskets and get the win.

The Wildcats spread the floor on Hundred and forced the Hornets to move away from the basket as the ‘Cats hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter on their way to a 17-12 lead after eight minutes play. Hundred moved out of their packed in zone in the second frame, and the Wildcats used penetration from the guards to get some easy looks in close from junior center Jason Anderson. Anderson accounted for eight points in the quarter, and guard Matt Saxon hit for seven on two driving buckets and a 3-4 showing from the charity stripe. Hundred went stone cold in the period and finished with only five points to go into the locker room down, 35-20.

The Hornets came out ready to play in the third quarter but couldn’t overcome the Wildcats’ inside game as Anderson continued to get around the defense for easy baskets. Both teams finished the quarter with 17. Hundred put on a big comeback in the fourth frame but fell short in the end to take the loss. Paden City went up as many as 22 in the fourth, with four minutes to play, but the Hornets fought back, behind 11 points from Cody Soles to pull to within seven.

Paden City canned 17 in the fourth quarter and hit some big free throws in the last two minutes to put the game away. Anderson and Saxon led the ‘Cats with 19 each, while Trey Slider and Anthony Newman each added 10. Slider also crashed the boards for 10 rebounds and dished out four assists. Saxon had seven assists and four steals on the night. Anderson was also big on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Hundred’s Soles was the game’s top scorer with 23 points, while the Hornets 6’5″ center Travis McCoy netted 13 and 10 rebounds. The home team hit 18 field goals, including five 3’s, but Paden City countered with 17 field goals, including seven 3’s. Hundred was 9-20 from the line, while the Wildcats hit on 14-26.

Visiting Caldwell Defeats Wildcats, 70-54

Paden City and Caldwell high schools hooked up in boys basketball at Bob Burton Gymnasium on Feb. 12. The visiting Redskins went home with a 70-54 victory, which dropped the Wildcats to 5-14 on the season.

In the last home game for the seniors of Paden City, four-year players Trey Slider and Matt Saxon scored eight points each and both played excellent floor games. However, it wasn’t enough as Caldwell used some great outside shooting to get the win. The Redskins hit 18 three-pointers on the night and had three players in double-figures to overcome the ‘Cats, who hit 10 of their own threes.

Caldwell went up 18-13 after the first quarter, but Paden City played them close the second frame and were within striking distance at the half, 32-26. However, the visitors used a 22-12 third period to push the lead to 16 after three, which was the final margin. Both teams hit for 16 in the fourth.

Paden City was led by sophomore Ty Cain, who made his return after missing a couple games. Cain hit four 3-pointers and ended with 18 points; he also grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Anthony Newman, playing his last home game as well, hit for five points. Juniors Jason Anderson contributed six points, and Walter Joy added nine points, including three 3-pointers.

Caldwell’s Debold was the game’s leading scorer with 20, which included six 3-pointers. Heller backed him up with 18 points, including three 3-pointers. Lowery, with four 3-pointers, ended with 16. Paden City hit 16 field goals and made good on 12-22 free throws, while Caldwell hit 24 field goals and went 8-11 from the line.
