Anderson, Jones Earn Athlete of the Week Honors
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for February 13, 2019 are Tyler Consolidated heavyweight wrestler Billy Anderson and girls basketball player Josey Jones.
The Silver Knights have had limited success this wrestling season, due to a lack of filling weight classes; however, one of the highlights of the season has been the steady performance of senior four-year performer and letterwinner Billy Anderson.
Recently he has made some noise in the heavyweight class and finished third in a huge LKC wrestling tournament. He was seeded as the fourth wrestler in the regionals tournament at Fairmont, with hopes of advancing to the state tournament in Huntington. On Friday and Saturday, in the regionals, Anderson got a sixth-place finish while picking up two wins in the event.
His work ethic and attitude are two of his greatest attributes. He is always willing to help the younger and less experienced wrestlers. His overall record for the 2018-19 season shows him with 14 wins against six defeats. Friday and Saturday at Fairmont, he didn’t place high enough to make the state tournament, but with every match he competed in, he gave 100 percent and came out a winner. Congratulations to Billy Anderson on a successful wrestling career at Tyler Consolidated.
Josey Jones is a 1,000-plus point scorer for Tyler, and team leader in most categories. Her week was impressive as she turned in a 35-point performance in the senior night win over Wirt County. She also scored 14 in a win over Ravenswood and had 15 in the Knights’ third win of the week over Doddridge County – for a total of 64 points in the three games.
Jones also added 18 steals, 16 rebounds and 11 assists for the week. She is also near the top in scoring and steals among all players in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Congratulations to Josey Jones on a great week of Silver Knights Basketball.
