Silver Knights Take Down Tigers

Tyler Consolidated got a win on the road Tuesday, Jan. 29, knocking off the Wirt County girls, 49-45, in Elizabeth. The Knights fell behind in the first quarter, and after eight, the Tigers held a 15-11 advantage. Tyler got things going in the second period and used a tight defense to hold Wirt to five points while they put 18 of their own on the board for a 29-20 lead at the break.

Knights senior wing player JoLee Walton had a big first half, leading the team with 14 points. Peyton Kocher hit for 11 in support. The home team Tigers got recharged during halftime and outscored the visitors, 19-10, in the third to tie things at 39 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The last period belonged to the Knights as they held Wirt to seven points while scoring 12 of their own to get the victory. Walton finished as the game’s top scorer with 20, while grabbing nine rebounds. Kocher added 14 and had two steals and three assists. Josey Jones hit for seven points while adding six steals and five assists. Regan Smith got a pair of buckets; Caleigh Phillips hit for three points, and Summer Miller added a free throw.

Wirt County had a trio of players hit in double figures with Hayes scoring 14, and Stephens and Wyer each added 11. Wirt hit 13 field goals in the game and made 8-18 free throws, while Tyler Consolidated went 12-22 from the free throw line and made 17 field goals. The Knights out-rebounded the Tigers, 39-28.
