Alex McCoy celebrates a victory in a recent match.

Paden City held its first-ever high school wrestling event at home on Saturday, Dec. 29 in a tri-match with Ritchie County and Tyler Consolidated. In just their second year of wrestling, the Wildcats continue to build the program under head coach Michael Owens and assistant Mike Shreves. The Wildcats picked up a win over Tyler Consolidated, 30-0 to 24.0, but fell, 42.0 to 18.0, to Ritchie County

Ritchie County, a school with deep wrestling roots, proved to be too much for the Wildcats as the Rebels won two of the three matches actually held. The Wildcats actually performed well but fell short in many weight classes, losing by forfeit. Ritchie County started out with a double forfeit in the 106-pound weight class. They then got a win in the 113-pound weight class when Jeremy Darnold won by fall over Wildcat Jasup Spragg.

Ritchie won by forfeit in the 120, 126, 132, 138, and 145-pound weight classes. Paden City filled the 152-pound weight class and picked up a nice win by fall, as Mike Shreves got the best of Ritchie’s Kayden Procacina. Alex McCoy won the 160-pound weight class for Paden City by forfeit.

Ritchie County’s Hunter Leggett got a fall win over Paden City’s James Beaver in a hard-fought match in the 182-pound class. Ritchie received a double forfeit in the 195-pound class and 285-pound class. The Wildcats picked up a win in the 220-pound class with Ryan Cross winning by forfeit.

Against Tyler Consolidated, only two matches were held with Paden City’s Jasup Spragg winning over the Silver Knights’ James Judge by fall. The other match was in the 182-pound class with Paden City’s James Judge picking up a win over Tyler’s Jacob Sharp by fall. The Silver Knights won the 106-pound weight class by forfeit. Each school had a forfeit in the 120, 126 and 132-pound weight classes. The Knights won the 138-pound weight class by forfeit. The 145-pound weight class had a double forfeit. Mikey Shreves won the 152-pound weight class by forfeit, and Alex McCoy won the 160-pound class by forfeit.
