Paden City Wins Opener
Paden City hosted Hundred High School on Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the season opener for both schools’ girls basketball teams. The Wildcats took advantage of the home court and ran away from the Hornets, 47-32, to start the 2018-19 season on a winning note.
The Wildcats jumped out early to a 4-0 lead, but Hundred came back with a three-pointer and a conventional basket to take the lead, 5-4. That was the last time the Hornets led as Skylar Fulks knocked down a three for Paden City, and Abbe Stackpole got a bucket on a jumper. Hannah Loy hit for two, and the first quarter ended 13-8, Paden City.
The second period was much the same with the ‘Cats again scoring 13 while holding the Hornets to six for a 26-14 halftime lead. Paden City, behind eight third quarter points from Loy, outscored the visitors, 14-3, in the quarter to go up, 40-17. Paden City Coach Alan Miller used all of his players in the fourth, and Hundred took advantage to win the fourth, 15-7, but it was too little too late, and the ‘Cats claimed the victory.
Leading the way for Paden City was Loy, who recently signed to play ball at Concord College, with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and six steals. S. Fulks hit some big shots, including a three-ball to finish with six field goals and 13 points. Junior Abbe Stackpole came up big with eight points and 11 steals. Senior Paige Leonard added four points and five steals while senior Madison Knight hit a jumper for two points. Loy was 4-4 from the foul line with the ‘Cats hitting 5-8 overall.
Hundred was led by senior Kathryn Henderson with 15 points, including a 5-6 effort from the line. She was assisted by Mahalah Britton, a 5’11” sophomore center. Adde Tuttle added four markers for the visitors.
Wildcat Girls fall to Valley
Playing their second home game of the week, Paden City was looking to go 2-0 on the season, but the Valley Lumberjills stepped up big Friday night to take home a 71-46 victory over the Wildcats in the visitor’s opening game of the season.
The Wildcats fell behind 17-8 after the first quarter and never got back in the game as Valley rode the hot hand of Caitlyn Underwood to up the count to 37-18 at the half. Underwood finished the game with 35 points as she knocked down eight three-pointers, hit five two-point baskets and was 1-2 from the line to lead all scorers in the contest.
Paden City outscored the Lumberjills 18-14 in the third quarter to pull to within 15, but Valley came back in the fourth to double up on the Wildcats 20-10 to get the win.
Paden City was led by sophomore Skylar Fulks, who was the only double figure scorer for the Wildcats with 11 points, including a three-pointer. Concord College recruit Hannan Loy ended with nine points, while Paige Leonard hit for eight points. Abbe Stackpole and Raven Fulks each hit for six points, while Madi Kline went 3-4 from the free throw line, and Madison Knight added a basket for two points. Erin McIntire hit 1-3 from the line for a point.
Loy added seven rebounds for Paden City, and Stackpole got six steals. The loss dropped Paden City to 1-1 on the young season.
