TCMS Football Wins LKC Crown
Tyler Consolidated Middle School’s Silver Knights football team defeated the Doddridge County Bulldogs on Thursday night, Oct. 25, to capture the LKC Championship with an 8-6 victory on the Knights field.
Doddridge struck first in the second quarter for a 6-0 lead that took the Bulldogs into the locker room with the lead.
The never-give-up Knights came out of the locker room fired up and ready to play though. They took the lead when tight end Ty Walton caught a 38-yard pass from quarterback Trenton Huffman, tying the game at 6-6. The Knights then tacked on the two-point conversion to take the lead as Jayden Helmick hit Walton for the go-ahead points.
From there it was a defensive battle, but on their last possession of the game, Doddridge got some momentum and put on a drive towards their goal line. On fourth down from the seven-yard line, they fell short when the Knights came up big with a stop.
The Knights then took over on downs with 37 seconds left in the game. They took the knee, and the boys from Tyler Consolidated secured the win and LKC Championship.
“Doddridge has a very nice team and are coached very well. They beat us early in the season in overtime, and tonight was as close as it gets,” said Coach Tommy Phillips. “Coach Buchanan and I are very proud of these kids’ efforts and their work ethic, not only tonight but all year. We only had 18 guys, and that’s tough to get practices in. But we worked hard every practice and got better as the year progressed.”
The coaches added they would like to thank the players for their commitment, the parents, all volunteers, the athletic director, principals and the community for their support and helping to make this a great season. With the win the Silver Knights finished with a 9-2 record.
