Paden City went into Saturday’s football game against the Bridgeport Bulldogs with only 14 players. Early in the week it looked like the Wildcats might not even play as they were down to 12 players. However, a couple of the boys stepped up and got clearance to play. Unfortunately, it was to no avail as the Bulldogs ran all over the Wildcats, getting a 70-38 win at Dave Bruney Football Complex in Martins Ferry, Ohio.

The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and showing their dominance as they picked up their first win of the campaign and dropped the Wildcats to 0-4.

Bridgeport lit the scoreboard up with 27 first quarter points, and from there it was all but over. The Bulldogs opened the game with the first score, a one-yard run by Kusic and a DuMortier kick, giving them an early 7-0 lead. The Bulldogs struck again, before the Wildcats could get a first down, adding another touchdown on an 18 yard pass from Kusic to Ray.The home team added two more in the first on a one-yard run and a 21-yard pass.

In the second frame they added 20 more points to their total and led 47-0 before the Wildcats got a late second quarter score to go into the half down 47-8. Ryan Cross went in for six on a four-yard run and then caught the two-point conversion pass from Alex McCoy.

Bridgeport got on the board first in the second half with a 52-yard run, which proved to be the only score of the third period. The two-point conversion run was good, and the score stood at 55-8. To start the fourth quarter, Paden City got some offensive flow and Cross scored his second touchdown of the night on a one-yard run up the gut. Senior first-time player Matt Saxon ran in the conversion to make it 55-16. Paden City got the next two scores of the fourth when Saxon returned a punt 55 yards for six, making it 55-22. Cross got his third score of the night on a 15-yard jaunt, and Anthony Newman added the two-point run to draw the Wildcats closer, 55-30.

The home team then got a 59-yard run from Kuneff, and DuMortier added the boot to make it 62-30. Paden City still had some fight left in them, and Saxon took a pass from McCoy and rambled 80 yards for his second score of the night. Newman added the run, and it was 62-38. Bridgeport however got another big play as Ray ran for 59 yards and a score; the two point pass was good for the final score of the game.

Paden City ended with 13 first downs and 218 yards rushing on 33 carries. Cross ended with 18 rushes for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while Saxon had 73 yards on eight carries. The Wildcats went 3-6 passing for 88 yards and a score. The Wildcats lost the ball three times on fumbles and turned it over once on an interception. They also were penalized five times for 43 yards.

The Wildcats will faceHundred at Berger Field, in Paden City on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. Hundred is coming off its first win in a long time. It should be a decent game, but this writer predicts Paden City will pick up the win, 28-18.
