Spotlight: Josey Jones
The Tyler Star News’ Spotlight Athlete of the Week for July 11, 2018 is Tyler Consolidated soon-to-be senior Josey Jones. Jones has been a big part of Tyler Consolidated sports for her entire high school career. Her favorite sport is reportedly volleyball where she is one of the top all-around players in the area. However, when it comes to basketball, she is no pushover either.
The familiar quote, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” would apply to Josey Jones. She has been, and continues to be, a rising star at TCHS. According to volleyball coach Richard Summers, Josey is a four-year starter, “and we need her leadership and high level of play to be successful this year.” Summers stated, “Jones is that rare individual who was born to play volleyball. I think she will have a great senior year.”
A two-sport athlete at Tyler Consolidated High School, Jones is involved in many other activities. She is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, the Book Club, and was Secretary of the Prom Club. She has been named Student of the Month by the TCHS faculty senate and has earned the Honor Roll each six weeks since she has been in high school, currently carrying a 3.8 GPA.
As a volleyball player, she is a three-time letter winner, first team WV All-State, Second Team All-LKC, First Team All-Valley, and Special Honorable Mention LKC (sophomore year). Her basketball honors are just as impressive. She has lettered each of her first three years, was All-Tournament in the Paden City Wildcat Classic, First Team All-LKC, Second Team LKC (sophomore season), Honorable Mention WV All-State, and Honorable Mention All-Valley.
As a volleyball player for the Knights, her 2017 stats show why she’s made the grade. As a middle hitter and defensive specialist, she had 310 kills, which is 3.3 kills per set. She added 561 blocks and served up 210 points, including 43 aces. Her serving accuracy was among the state’s best at 92 percent. To add to that, she also had 378 digs and 135 points.
In basketball, Jones can play nearly every position on the floor and is effective taking the ball to the basket, hitting the jumper while also racking up assists. She is a very good defensive player, leading the team in steals with 89 on the season. Her foul shooting percentage is 78 percent, and she hits her field goals at 41 percent. Her scoring average of 15.9 points was the best on the team. She scored 349 points her junior year.
When volleyball and basketball season rolls around this year, come out to Tyler Consolidated and watch one of the best female athletes in the area. The Knights are loaded with seniors this year, and any one of them can have a good game. Josey Jones rarely has a bad one, and you just might catch her at her best.
She will be wanting to go out on a winning note, so her effort will be something to watch. She has always been a hustler, and her concentration on the game never seems to waiver.
Jones has future plans to enter college at either Fairmont State or another West Virginia college.
Josey Jones, the Tyler Star News wishes you the best in your senior year at Tyler Consolidated High School
