Nelson, Stackpole Honored as Athletes of the Week
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for May 2, 2018 are Paden City sophomore speedster Abbe Stackpole and Silver Knight track athlete Destry Nelson.
Stackpole nearly won the 100-meter dash at the Carehaven Track Invitational in St. Marys Friday night and came in with a good leap in the long jump to account for all 13 of the Wildcats’ points in the girls division. Stackpole is a promising athlete for Paden City. She is a good basketball player as well and continues to work hard to be the best she can be. Just watching her, you can she the determination and desire to win. She also ran the open 200, making the qualifying round in the preliminaries. Keep your eye on her; she is going to be a good one.
Destry Nelson of the Silver Knights continues to get better and his work ethic, according to the coaches, is second to none. In what many consider the toughest race of them all, the open 400-meter dash, Nelson blitzed the field on Friday night in the Carehaven Invitational to get the first place finish, winning by two seconds over East Fairmont’s top runner and runners from St. Marys, Point Pleasant, Williamstown and Magnolia. He also finished in the point race in the 800-meter run and ran the anchor leg of the first place 4×800 meter relay team. Nelson could be a difference maker in the upcoming regionals and state meets.
Special Honorable Mention for the week goes to Silver Knight Spencer Corley, Paden City’s Matt Saxon and Ryan Cross, and Knights Luke Daugherty.
