Four Baseball Standouts Earn Recognition This Week
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for April 18, 2018 are David Joy and Trey Slider of Paden City, and Luke Daugherty and Tyler West of Tyler Consolidated.
David Joy came out of a mini hitting slump to knock in two runs and power Paden City over Frontier in the Consolation Game of the Tyler Consolidated Boggs Wooden Bat Classic on Saturday at Tyler. With two out, and the Wildcats down in the bottom of the seventh, Joy took a 2-2 count fastball and drilled it over the second baseman’s head to drive in two runs and give Paden City the lead. Paden City then went on to win the game 8-6.
Slider pitched a complete seven-inning game against the Cougars of Frontier, in that same consolation game, striking out 11 batters along the way while walking only one. He used a combination of fastballs and a wicked curve to scatter 10 hits and get the win. He also drilled a double. Slider also picked up a win earlier in the week and finished the week with 16 strikeouts and five hits, while driving in six runs.
West, who is a real competitor, led Tyler Consolidated to the 8-2 championship win over Magnolia in the Boggs Classic as he clobbered the ball for a single, double and a home run, driving in four runs while going 3-4 from the plate. He also had the go-ahead hit for the Knights on April 13 against Frontier when he drilled a bases-loaded triple to the center field fence. West also played well at third, making several key plays.
Daugherty threw a complete game against the Blue Eagles in the finals, getting five strikeouts and giving up only six hits. He also scored two runs and added a single and an RBI. His specialty is his ability to hit the strike zone, while relying on his team to make the defensive plays.
Special Honorable Mention goes out to Gage Huffman of Tyler Consolidated and Clayton Thomas of Paden City. Nathan Barker, Tyler Consolidated’s top hurdler, also earns Special Honorable Mention.
Honorable Mention goes to the Silver Knights’ Maddie Ice, and JoLee Walton, Paden City’s Aubrey Neff and Jenna Ferrebee, and Tyler’s Mark Rucker and Destry Nelson.
