Roberts, Phillips Are Recognized as Top Athletes
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for March 14 are Silver Knights basketball players Dylan Roberts and Griffin Phillips. Both players stood out in the regional victory over Cameron that propelled the Silver Knights to its first state tournament appearance since 2007.
Phillips played an excellent defensive game coming up with three steals and causing numerous turnovers. On the offensive side too, Phillips was a thorn in the Dragons side as he hit for a game-high 23 points which included five three-pointers, two at the start of the third quarter, which took the fire out of the Dragons. Phillips also kept his teammates involved with pin point passing and was effective in getting the ball up court against the visitors’ defense.
Roberts was spot on in clutch time during the fourth quarter. Throughout the game he played great defense against Cameron’s hot shooting guard. The Knights held the Dragons to only five points in the third quarter with Roberts hitting a nice pull-up jumper at a critical point in the period, giving the Knights the lead for good. During the fourth quarter, with the contest still in question, Roberts called for the ball, and as the Dragons had to play catchup ball, they were forced to foul. Roberts didn’t disappoint the home team as he went to the line 14 times, sinking them all to put the game out of reach. Overall he ended with 17 points and hit 15-16 foul tries. He also was credited with three steals.
Getting Special Honorable Mention for the week is Mark Rucker who added 10 points and also was deadly at the line, sinking 8-10. Steven Ross and Tyler West combined for 11 rebounds and nine points, earning Honorable Mention.
