TCHS Hoopster Mark Rucker Earns the Honor This Week
The Tyler Star News Athlete of the Week for March 7, 2018 is Tyler Consolidated basketball player Mark Rucker. Rucker had a great Region 1, Section 2, tournament, as he led the Silver Knights to the Championship with two straight banner games. In the first round game against Ritchie County he led the team with 18 points. His drives to the basket seemed to be tough for the Rebels to stop as he played a physical game going to the free throw line five times and knocking down four. Add to that 10 rebounds, and six steals all while playing around three quarters.
Mark is a quiet type player you does a lot of unnoticed things on the court, especially on defense when he uses his speed and strength to over power the opposition. In the Championship match with St. Marys he was once again the difference maker as he finished the night with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while constantly hounding St. Marys on defense. Near the end of the game with the score within four, he came up with a driving layin to move the Knights back to a six point lead with under a minute to go. His effort on Friday also included three assists and five steals.
Special honorable mention goes to Tyler West who has been a giant under the board the past week getting 17 rebounds against Ritchie and adding 14 against St. Marys. Also getting Special honorable mention is Dylan Roberts who hit 14 against St. Marys including a couple big three pointers and Griffi Phillips who’s all over the court on defense and scored 11 points, seven in the last period.
