Trio of Local Athletes Earn Recognition This Week

The Tyler Star News’ Athletes of the Week for February 7, 2018 are the Silver Knights’ Josey Jones and Peyton Kocher, both members of the girls basketball team, and Cory Chipps – Silver Knights Wrestler.

Chipps, who wrestles for the Knights in the heavyweight division (290) lbs, went undefeated in the LKC Wrestling Championships at Calhoun County on Feb. 3 Chipps won every match by pin ,to take the title for the first time. He has placed second the past two years, but through hard work and conditioning, he proved to be the best of the class. Chipps will be wrestling this weekend at Fairmont in the regionals for a chance to compete in the state tournament in Huntington. He is currently 21-1 on the season. Congratulations to Cory Chipps!

Meanwhile, Jones and Kocher have played extremely well this past week as the Silver Knights girls basketball team has been picking up some crucial victories, heading down the stretch toward tournament time.

In the Jan. 29 win over Beallsville, Jones hit for 10 points, while also having six steals, four assists and eight rebounds. On Jan. 31, against Paden City, Jones lit up the scoreboard with 23 points and added five steals, three assists and six rebounds. On Feb. 1 at Ravenswood, the junior star again hit for 23 points to lead the Silver Knights to their third straight win. Jones is an all-around good ball player who gives 110 percent the entire game. She leads the team in steals and points on the season.

Kocher has been on fire lately from beyond the arc. In the win over Beallsville, she knocked in five three pointers for all of her 15 points. She also had three assists. On Jan. 31, when Paden City came to town, Kocher started back up where she left off. In the first quarter she hit her first four tries from three point land and then added another later in the game for her fifth in two consecutive games. Against the Wildcats, she also added three steals and two assists in limited playing time. On Feb. 1 at Ravenswood, Kocher hit two more three-pointers, giving her 12 in the three games. She is a threat to score everytime she touches the ball and is a good foul shooter as well.


Special Honorable Mention this week is Mark Rucker from Tyler Consolidated, Ethan Cross of Paden City, and Hannah Loy of Paden City.

Honorable Mention goes out to Griffin Phillips and Steven Ross of Tyler Consolidated and Abbe Stackpole and Skylar Fulks of Paden City.
