Phillips Leads Knights Over Seminoles
Tyler Consolidated’s boys basketball team picked up its second straight win on Jan. 27, in New Martinsville, as the boys humbled the Monroe County, Ohio Seminoles, 80-54, in the fourth game of the 10th annual Rotary Basketball Challenge.
The Silver Knights started out strong with senior guard Dylan Roberts stretching the defense with his long-range shooting. The Knights got three straight 3’s from Roberts to take a 9-0 lead before the visitors from Ohio put on a run and took a 12-11 lead. Tyler West took a pass from Roberts and got an easy bucket inside. Kyle Mason made a steal and drove the length of the floor for two points, and Griffin Phillips hit a long three at the buzzer to give the Knights a 16-14 first quarter advantage.
The second period was all Tyler Consolidated as the boys outscored the Ohio team, 21-3, to go into the locker room up 20, 37-17. During the quarter Steven Ross got two buckets off rebounds, and Luke Daugherty got two points on a nice feed from Roberts. Roberts hit another three off a pass from Mark Wilson, and Mark Rucker scored on a follow-up basket. Wilson then hit a three on a pass from Rucker followed by two straight baskets from Phillips. After a three from Monroe Central, Rucker hit a last second three to end the quarter.
After the break, both teams traded baskets for most of the third with Monroe Central getting a one point edge, 20-19, to make it 58-39 Tyler going into the last frame.
During the third, Phillips took over scoring 13 points on quick drives to the basket. Roberts also hit a jumper and West, Ross and Wilson also scored two.
The Silver Knights outscored the Seminoles, 22-15, in the last quarter to get the win. Phillips hit for six more in the fourth to finish the game with 28 points, four assists, six rebounds and three steals. Roberts ended with 14, including four 3’s. He also had three assists. Tyler Consolidated Boys Crush Wirt County
The Silver Knights started out slow Jan. 25 in a make-up game with the Wirt County Tigers; however, the boys recovered quickly and came away with a 26 point win, 83-57 on the home floor. The visiting Tigers jumped out to a 15-11 first period lead, but the Silver Knights took the lead for good in the second frame on a bucket from Griffin Phillips. Tyler Consolidated went into the locker room up 31-27.
Phillips scored a game-high 31 points for the Knights as he hit 15 baskets and 1-2 from the free throw line. The third quarter, Tyler outscored the Tigers, 27-14, to take an 20-point lead into the final eight minutes. The fourth quarter didn’t get much better for Wirt County as the Knights added eight more points to their lead with a 25-17 advantage.

Silver Knights Get Revenge Win Against Liberty Harrison
Tyler Consolidated took to the road in boys basketball on Monday, Jan. 22, as they traveled to Clarksburg for a match-up with Liberty Harrison.
Just about a month ago, Liberty came to Silver Knight town and upset the Knights on the home floor. That might have brought out the best in Tyler as they returned the favor with a 51-47 triumph on Liberty’s home floor, to improve their record to 9-5 on the season.
Monday’s contest went right down to the wire as both teams battled back and forth throughout the contest. At the end of the first quarter, the score stood at 16-16. The Silver Knights got a one-point edge in the second quarter, 9-8, and went into the locker room up one.
The three point line was the difference in the game as the Knights canned eight from beyond the arc, compared to only two from the home team. Griffin Phillips canned four 3’s, while Tyler West added two. Kyle Mason and Mark Rucker each hit for one.
The Silver Knights extended their lead to four after the third-quarter final margin, which proved to be the final margin as both teams played dead even in the last eight minutes.
Good teamwork and balanced scoring seemed to keep Liberty off balance, as the Knights got 14 points from Phillips, and 10 from West. Rucker added eight, while Dylan Roberts and Nate Lancaster each chipped in with seven. Rounding out the scoring for the Knights was Kyle Mason with three and Luke Daugherty with two.
The Knights only hit 34 percent from the floor, 18-53, but had 8-18 from three point land. They also led in rebounds, 34-30, with West grabbing 11 for a double double on the night. Mason had four assists, and Phillips and Rucker each added three steals.
“We are having some ups and downs, but I see improvement in our ability to get open shots and our rebounding. We are also running the floor well and finding the open man. Our team play is getting better. Liberty is a good solid team who beat us at home, so I’m very happy with the kids and how well they responded tonight,” said Coach Rick Leach.
