Amos, Saxon Are Recognized as Athletes of the Week
The Tyler Star News’ Athletes of the Week for Jan. 24 are Wildcat basketball player Matt Saxon and Wildcat wrestler Rander Amos.
Amos a senior wrestler for the Wildcats’ first-ever program. Amos took a big step in the giant Ron Mauk OVAC wrestling tournament when he went in as a 12th seed and got a first round win by pin at the 1:46 mark. Amos is the first Wildcat in history to gain a OVAC tournament win.
Amos later fell in his next two matches by decision. He was, by far, the strongest wrestler in his 160 pound weight class, but the more experienced wrestlers prevailed. Just getting through the tournament without getting pinned is an accomplishment, but winning the first match by pin in the championship round for a first time wrestler is unheard of. Congratulations to Rander Amos.
Paden City basketball has been struggling lately, but not for lack of effort. On Friday night, the Wildcats lost a big game to the Magnolia Blue Eagles, but Paden City guard Matt Saxon played with a lot of heart and determination. He missed a good portion of the first half but came back strong and finished the game with 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Saxon plays a good floor game, and on Saturday afternoon demonstrated, again, his talents as he helped the Wildcats to their third win of the season with a triple double. At 5’7” Saxon was the leading team rebounder with 11, while also dishing out 10 assists and scoring 10 points. He was also credited with four steals as the Cats defeated Harman high school to the tune of 70-59 in a WVHIT game.
Making the special honorable mention list for the week are Tyler Silver Knights Josey Jones, JoLee Walton, Amanda Reynolds and Peyton Kocher.
