Silver Knights Wrestlers Hit the Mat at St. Mary’s
In one of last week’s only sporting events taking place in the Ohio Valley, the Knights of Tyler Consolidated’s wrestling team braved the weather and road conditions to hit the mats at the St. Mary’s Annual Wrestling Tournament.
As things turned out, it was a pretty good event with nine teams able to get there and participate. The Silver Knights took fourth place among the teams with several strong finishes. Leading the way for Tyler was, once again, the big man Cory Chipps who ended the day as the heavyweight champion. Chipps is fast becoming the man to beat, and most schools are having a tough time dealing with him. At 6’5″and 290 pounds of muscle, you can see why.
Senior standout Michael Doyle finished a strong second on the day to bring home some hardware, and Cody Hunter again proved his worth as he also recorded a second place finish. Knights JV heavyweight Billy Anderson was able to get the Knights more points as he finished the day in third place in the division.
Other Tyler wrestlers who finished tough on Saturday were Sebastian Hooks, who got a couple wins, and Stephen Yost, who also picked up a pin. Neither wrestler made it to the podium but both did a nice job during the meet.
“I was very happy to make it safely and get some much-needed mat time in. I am very proud of our performance against some very good teams. St. Mary’s always puts on a great tournament and this week’s was no exception. My kids handled themselves very well, and I am excited as we head towards some more big meets,” said Coach Chad Snider.
