Pilots Too Much for Wildcats
River High School came into Paden City on Wednesday, Dec. 27 and cruised to a 76-37 victory over the 2-4 Wildcats. Paden City fell behind, 26-8, in the first quarter, and River stretched the lead to 46-25 at the half, before holding the Wildcats to only 12 second half points, while scoring 30 of their own.
For Paden City, Ethan Cross hit three 3’s while leading the Wildcats with 11 points. Cross was backed by Matt Saxon with 10, including two 3-balls. Garrett Cross added six; Trey Slider hit for four. Anthony Newman got three on a long-bomb. Seth Bohrer got two, and Colton Elliott hit a free throw.
River was led by 20 points from Cody Hupp, including a 4-4 showing at the line, while James Hendershot hit three 3’s, en-route to 11 points. Drew Dietz finished one short of double figures with nine, and he ended with 14 rebounds. The Pilots out-rebounded the Wildcats, 33-14, and made 31-55 shots to Paden City’s 11-39, (28 percent). The ‘Cats also turned the ball over 16 times ,to nine for River.
“River has a veteran-loaded team, and we are still young,” said Coach Jeff Hohn.
He continued, “River outplayed us in all phases of the game, but we will go back to the drawing board and keep working.
This is a good bunch of kids; unfortunately, we are undersized and still learning. We will still come out and play and give our best shot. These kids are like all other Wildcat teams; they are not quitters,”said Hohn.
Wildcats Fall To Knights
Paden City fell behind early at home against Tyler Consolidated Dec. 22. The ‘Cats couldn’t quite catch up as the Silver Knights went away with an easy 75-44 victory. The Wildcats fell to 2-4 as they struggled to find the basket and were plagued by poor foul shooting. However, despite being down 17-5 at the end of one, the ‘Cats played nearly even with the Knights in the second frame, scoring 15 points to Tyler’s 16, for a 33-20 halftime deficit.
Paden City came out of the break and got back into the game, cutting the Knights lead to eight. Tyler responded and outscored the ‘Cats 18-15 in the quarter, taking a commanding 51-35 lead. The fourth quarter was all Tyler as they outscored the Wildcats 24-9 to secure the win.
Paden City’s Trey Slider led all scorers with 14, including two 3’s and a 4-6 showing from the free throw line. He was backed by Garrett Cross with 11 and nine rebounds. Slider also added seven rebounds. Matt Saxon hit for eight, and Ethan Cross added six. Seth Bohrer and Bryant McKay both scored a bucket.
Tylet Consolidated was led by Griffin Phillips and Mark Rucker, with 13 points each, while Tyler West added 12 and 13 rebounds. Nate Lancaster stepped up big in the game with 10 points, while adding six assists, three steals and five rebounds. Dylan Roberts scored nine points and had four rebounds, and Mark Wilson added nine points as well. Luke Daugherty, Adam Efaw, Steven Ross and Levi Smith added two each, and Kyle Mason hit a foul shot and added three assists. The Knights were 9-13 from the line, while Paden City was 8-14.
The Knights also shot 48 percent from the field to 36 for the Wildcats.The first quarter saw the Wildcats go 2-9 from the floor, while also turning the ball over eight times.
