Paden City volleyball season ends with loss to Ritchie County
The Wildcats of Paden City and the Ritchie County Rebels waited a little over two hours for the Tyler/Magnolia match to end before they took the floor for the final Region One Section Two match of the evening on Wednesday November 1, at Paden City high school. The long wait didn’t seem to have an effect on either team as they came out firinig away at each other in a hard fought first set. Paden City had the early lead but the strength of the Rebels took over and they got set one with a 25- 19 victory that wasn’t easy by any means.
Paden City looked to atone for the loss in set two but Ritchie quickly set the pace and raced out to an early 8-3 lead which they would not relinquish. The Rebels used superior net play to hammer down several unreturnable kills to get the lead and win set two 25-16 Paden City looked to be off their game a little as the Wildcats had several missed digs and couldn’t seem to get the sets for for the hitters. However they volleyied well and made a couple moves towards a comeback that fell short.
In set three the Cat’s seemed to gain their composure and took the Rebels to the wire before falling in the end 25-23. Ritchie County advanced to the section finals against Tyler Consolidated with the win. Paden City ended their season with a very good 29-10 record. For the Cat’s Senior Jenna Ferrebee led the way as she served for 10 points, three aces, nine kills , five blocks and four digs. Katrina Heasley served up 11 points and had five digs, three kills and an assist. Freshmen Hope Weber and Mallory Yeater showed things to come as they combined for 23 points, and 14 kills. Yeater added two digs and 15 assists and Weber had five blocks and an ace.
Kameron McClain had a nice match with eight points and six digs and Aubrey Neff came in with seven points, two digs and seven assists. Malayna Price got eight digs and Jenna Arnett had two kills.
Wildcats open Sectional Play with win over St. Mary’s
The 2017 Class A Region One, Section Two tournament kicked off on Tuesday, October 31, at Paden City high school with the Wildcats hosting the St. Mary’s Blue Devild in a first round game. The match pitted the fourth seed Cat’s against the fifth seed Blue Devils with the winner advancing to play Ritchie County on Wednesday.
Paden City wasted no time in this one, showing their dominance over St. Mary’s as they took the first set 25-13. The set started out with the Cat’s getting a 2-0 lead before the Blue Devils rallied back for a 3-2 advantage. Paden City then broke the visitors serve and ran off six straight points on some fine serving from Katrina Heasley and net play from Hope Weber and Jenna Ferrebee to go up 8-3.
St. Mary’s got a point on a net seve by the Wildcats and then had a bad serve of their own. From there it was all over as the Wildcats scored seven straight to make it 15-7 and then outscored the Blue Devils 10-6 down the stretch to get the win.
The Second set belonged to Paden City as the visitors again had trouble handling the Cat’s hard serves. Ferrebee and Aubrey Neff both had two aces in the set and Heasley had two hard cross court kills. The Wildcats went up 15-8 and then finished wirth a run of 10-4 to claim the set 25-12.
Set three was more of the same as the Wildcats prowled all over the Blue Devils enroute to a 25-10 win to send them to the semi finals on Wednesday, November 1. Leading the way for the Wildcats in the match was Weber with a match high 20 service points, 14 kills and two blocks. Heasley had her serve working as well as she pounded in 15 points and added two kills, plus six digs.
Mallory Yeater handled the setters spot with perfection getting 34 sets, 11 assists, 14 points, three digs and two kills. Ferrebeehad 11 points and two aces, plus one dig and eight kills. Neff finished the night with three points, 20 sets and six assists while Malayna Price got eight digs. Kameron McClain got four points and four digs. Cora Anderson scored three service points.
