Freshman Cross Country Star Corley Gets the Nod
The Tyler Star News Athlete of the week for October 25, 2017, is freshman corss country runner Spencer Corley. Just last year Corley was running in Middle School competitions and showed promise of becoming a top notch distance runner with a future on the Silver Knights cross country and track teams.
No one suspected however that he would progress so fast to the level he has now reached. Taking that step from junior high to competing against the best of the best in West Virginia, is comparable to jumping from high school to a starting spot on a college team. Spencer has done just that and more. Not only has he made the grade against the competition he has also progressed to the level of the elite.
This past Thursday he proved once again he will be a force to reckon with over the next few years, when he earned a sixth place finish in the cross country regions to advance to the state competition at Cabel Midland High School on Saturday. Distance running can be and often is the most difficult sport to compete in. You must be dedicated to getting yourself in the best physical condition possible, which means countless hours of training and miles of running non-stop, including some hills and rough terrain.
Corley has evidently put in the work and it has served it’s purpose. His love for the sport and willingness to give the extra effort has paid dividends. Look for him to represent Tyler Consolidated well on Saturday and over the course of the next few years.
Special Honorable mentioned for the week is another cross country runner Jahnvi Duncan who placed 16th and also qualified for the state meet. She will also represent the Silver Knights well in the girls division. Riley Leasure and George Tenanat are special honorable mention as well, as they both played tenacious defense in Friday nights football loss to Magnolia. Although the Knights found themselves on the short end of the scoreboard these two defenders stood out head over heals above the rest. Leasure had 11 solo tackles and a fumble recovery, while Tenant had 11 solos and four assists on the night.
Congratulations to these fine athletes on their performances during the week.
