Knights Celebrate Homecoming With Big Victory Over Cougars
The Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights scored quick and often on Friday Night, as they had their way with an out manned Calhoun County team. On the first Friday football game of the fall, the Knights gave the annual homecoming crowd something to cheer about as they wasted little time in getting the first score en-route to a 63-0 blasting of the visiting Cougars,
On their second play from scrimmage, Junior Quarterback Griffin Phillips handed off to Mark Rucker who went in untouched for the 10 yard T.D. to give Tyler a quick 8-0 lead after Phillips punched in the two point conversion run with 11:28 to play in the first.
The Silver and Black added another score with 9:00 still left in the frame when Kyle Mason took off on a 48 yard jaunt down the sideline to lift the Knights to a 13-0 lead and it was then off to the races.
The Knights would score three more times in the first quarter to virtually wrap things up for what would be a long night for Calhoun who fell to 0-5 on the season.
Brandon Weigle caught a 61 yard pass from Phillips for the third score with 6:06 showing on the first quarter clock and the extra point kick made it 21-0. The Knights defense forced another quick stop and at the 3:01 mark Rucker found paydirt with a 34 yard run to up the score to 28-0.
Colby Buchanan, then got in on the action just a minute later when he broke off tackle for a six yard T.D. to make it 35-0 at the end of one and the rout was on.
The second quarter saw Phillips make a nice cutback run and go all the way to the house for the 65 yard touchdown and with 7:38 left before halftime it was 42-0. Sophomore Gage Huffman added another Knights touchdown with 4:15 to play on a nifty 44 yard run and Phillips got another two point conversion to make it 50-0 at the half.
Tyler added a score in the third frame when Hunter Forrester scored from 20 yards out and Jacob America pushed one in on a three yard run early in the fourth to round out the scoring.
The Silver Knights led the game in total yardage 427-59 and had 13 first downs to Calhoun’s three. Rucker led the team in rushing with 98 yards on six carries and two touchdowns while Phillips added 71 yards on three carries, and a touchdown. He also was 3-4 passing for 85 yards and a score, plus four extra point kicks and two conversion runs.
The Knights never lost a fumble while Calhoun lost three of six. Riley Leasure led the defense with two solo tackles, four assists, two for a loss and four special teams tackles. Hunter Forrester also had a big game defensively with two solo’s, one sack and three special teams tackles.
The Silver Knights moved to 2-3 on the season and will have Friday off before returning to action on October 6, at Ritchie County.
