Rucker, Corley Earn Recognition
The Tyler Star News Athletes of the Week for August 30, 2017 are a pair of Tyler Consolidated underclassmen.
Mark Rucker, a standout three sport athlete for the Silver Knights and only a sophomore showed why he his a force to be reckoned with anytime he take the field. In the Silver Knights loss to Williamstown on Friday night he lit the scoreboard up four times and demonstrated his great athleticism by running through and around the Yellowjackets defense on his way to 180 yards on 18 carries.
His efforts included a first play from scrimmage 75 run around right end for a score and a 65 yard run later in the game. He also scored on a three yard run while catching a 21 yard pass for a score. Overall Rucker accounted for 228 total yards and 24 points.
The Knights have a lethal weapon in this young man who can also return punts and kickoffs and plays nice defense as well. If this wasn’t enough look for even bigger things from him as the season goes on.
Spencer Corley, a freshman cross country runner who gives it everything he has and then some showed the past two weeks why he is ranked as the 15th top cross country runner in the state. Last Saturday, August 19, the hard working freshman put on a show at the St. Mary’s Autumn Classic when he finished sixth overal amongst some of the best runners with 19 teams and 169 runners competing. Corley received his a metal in his first varsity event coming in first among the Silver Knights runners and finishing the tough course in a time of 17:57.
He competed this past Saturday in the Elizabeth Broughton Cross Country Invitational at Marietta, Ohio where he once again was in the top 10 finishing 4th overall and improving his time from last week with a 17:25 and again was the first Tyler Consolidated finisher across the line. Corley brings excitement to the Knights cross country team and his efforts make everyone else on the team perform better as they see his desire and work ethic. Look for more and better things to come from this youngster as he has four years to become the runner to beat in the state. He is fast approaching that now and could soon be the best of the best.
Special Honorable mention this week is Tyler Consolidated senior football player Colby Buchanan who caught a 12 yard touchdown pass and led the Knights on defense with six total tackles, including two for a loss.
Earning honorable mention: Is Silver Knights cross country runner senior Gavin Corley who impressed two weeks in a row, finishing the St. Mary’s race 22nd among the 169 runners and finished 14th this past Saturday, in the Marietta race.
Congradulations to all four athletes.
