Paden City Are Runners-Up In Spike-Out
On Saturday, July 26, Coach Fred King and his volleyball squad took part in an eight-team Spike-out sponsored by River High School at their gyms in Hannibal, Ohio. The tournament was the beginning of an annual Jim Turner Memorial with pool lay beginning in the morning at 9 a.m. and tournament play finishing around 5 p.m. in the afternoon.
The Wildcats got off to a shakey star by losing their first three matches but then came back strong to make the tournament and finish as runners-up to a strong Robert C. Bryd high school team from Clarksburg, WV. Although the Cats dropped the first three, they re-grouped and got a split with Beallsville, while beating Shadyside twice. They then took the momentum and continued to win, knocking off Magnolia in the tournament play to advance to the Championship match where they fell in two straight sets to RCB.
The championship match was nip and tug the first set with the Cats holding a 20-19 lead before RCB came on strong to get the win 25-22. In the second set RCB took an early lead 8-2 and eventually came away with a 25-12 win. Paden City received a good night from freshman Hope Weber who ended the day with 80 kills, 11 blocks and 75 points. Katrina Heasley finished with 60 points, 3 blocks, 12 digs and 54 kills.
“I couldn’t be anymore happier with this group, they played very well today despite the rocky start. We had a good mix of seniors and underclassman on the floor at all times and we also had one of our best hitters away along with a promising freshman,” said Coach King.
“We have a combination of height and speed this year and two great setters, one who is also a hitter and only a freshman. Our seniors will lead the way and the younger kids will follow. We are ready to get the season started and I believe we will be very competitive with everyone we play,” said Coach King.
