Ready to Kick Off Season on Gridiron
Its almost time to kick-off the 2017-2018 high school sports season with the 72nd annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Charity Football Classic, which will kick off at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 22 at Martins Ferry’s Dave Bruney Football Complex.
The OVAC Moved the game to Martins Ferry because the field on the Wheeling Island is getting a face-lift as we speak, and barring any late scratches and/or changes, both Ohio head coach Karl Justus and West Virginia head coach John Durdines have finalized their rosters and can’t wait till game time.
“Choosing the roster is unbelievably tough,” Durdines said. “There are so many good kids who you can’t take. And you have to play a game, so you can’t just take 32 players. We have kids who excelled on their teams, but there’s just so much talent.”
“Finding players wasn’t tough,” Justus said. “Eliminating players was the toughest part. With so many good players in the Ohio Valley, narrowing it down to 32 players makes it really challenging.”
Justus represented 18 schools from Ohio with River coming away with the max with three selections in, Mason Ladyga, Luke Matusik and Cody Saksa, while West Virginia’s Durdines selected Tyler Anderson and Jace Reed of Tyler Consolidated; and Chase Street of Magnolia as the only area layers selected.
Besides the football players participating from our area, there are band members, Queen of Queens, and cheerleaders, as well as past players and cheerleaders. This year the band members are, Makenzie Kimble, Ted Stackpole and Nachelle Probst from Tyler Consolidated. The OVAC will once again crown the Queen of Queens as girls representing twenty three OVAC high schools compete for the 2017 title.
The Talent Show for the Queen of Queens will take place this year at 7 p.m., Friday, July 21 and will be returning for the third year to the Capitol Theatre. Tickets will be available at the door, $7 for adults and $5 for children.
Come early for the pre-game activities featuring the OVAC All Star Marching Band, Drill Team, Cheerleaders, and Queen contestants.
