TCHS Hosts Putzulu Invitational Volleyball Tournement
The Eleventh Annual Putzulu Invitational Volleyball Tournament was held on Saturday, June 17, at Tyler Consolidated High School. The tournament is named in honor of Linda Putzulu, who was a long time Tyler County educator, coach and advocate for women’s sports. Fifteen teams from Ohio and West Virginia took part in this year’s tournament, including a team from Hedgesville, which is a four-hour trip. This tournament has become popular with area volleyball fans, as evidenced by a full house and some fans having to park in the lower parking lot.
Host team Tyler Consolidated had a very successful day, as the Silver Knights had wins against Paden City, River, Parkersburg Catholic, and a split with Parkersburg High School, all in pool play. Their record ensure the Knights a chance to compete in the championship rounds. In the semi-final match, the Knights defeated a strong Meadowbrook team in three sets to advance to the Final Four, where they faced Robert C. Byrd, coached by Ron Gilmore. The Knights split the first two sets with the Eagles, and held a 13-11 lead in the final set, playing to 15. However, R.C.B served up several aces and went on to win 15-13. Coach Gilmore’s crew advanced to the championship, but lost to Hedgesville High School in the championship.
Paden City High School also did well in Pool Play by defeating River and Parkersburg Catholic, but losing to Parkersburg High and Tyler Consolidated. The Wildcats advanced out of the pool to play Warren High School in the first round of the bracketed tournament. Unfortunately, they were unable to defeat the Warren Warriors.
“This is a first class tournament, made possible by our volleyball moms and volunteers,” said Coach Richard Summers. He continued, “The teams and coaches who participate exhibit great sportsmanship, and the level of volleyball was extremely high as well. We are pleased to honor such a special lady as Ms. Putzulu.”
Tyler Consolidated’s high school volleyball team attended the Marshall University Team Camp this past week and then hosted the eleventh annual Putzulu Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. Coach Summers keeps his players busy during the off season and it’s helps make for a strong program year-in-year-out.
