The Press Box For Week of Dec. 9
It was my pleasure this past week to participate in some of the great local sporting events here in Tyler and Wetzel counties. I also got to attend the Super Six Banquet and set in the press box at the Class A state championship game.
Things couldn’t have been any better, prime rib at the banquet, passes to the game and then setting next to Mr. Statistician, Doug Huff, while staying warm from the best view in the house. What a great time!
It was also great to take in the Paden City Girls Christmas Classic on Friday night, and there again not only see some great girls b-ball but to enjoy the fantastic hospitality room. Paden City A.D. Fred King always puts on a great tournament and has great help in feeding the officials, coaches and press. They do put on a quality event. He does it right.
The Bob and Sharon Burton boys Christmas Classic will be held this Friday and Saturday. Try not to miss this one as Clay-Battelle and Tyler battle Friday night followed by Paden City and Valley with the winners and losers to play Saturday night.
I love these events but I need to stay away from the food. I can see another 20 pounds coming if I don’t slow down. Tyler’s girls put on quite a display over the weekend and if you haven’t seen them play, try and make it soon. Coach Cathy Boggs has done a good job getting them ready, they return four starters from last year and have several other skilled players. From what I’ve seen they can go about nine or 10 deep without losing much. Good depth with the right attitude and good coaching makes a pretty good team.
I look for Paden City and Tyler to be playing on Friday night in the championship game but if not you will still see some quality basketball. Let’s help pack the Paden City gym both nights.
I like to give credit where due and Magnolia certainly is deserving of that. They played a near flawless game on Saturday night to capture the Class A title. 62-0 what else can be said? Let’s get things going early this year, hit the weight room, work on your speed and get dedicated, next fall will roll around soon. Maybe just maybe we can see a Tyler- Wetzel matchup in Wheeling come next December.
Boys basketball looks interesting as Magnolia returns four of five starters, Paden City lost two big scorers but have filled those gaps nicely, Wheeling Central has the WVU recruit and has also added some other help, Clarksburg Notre Dame will be a force to reckon with and St Mary’s is no slouch. I believe by the time the regular season is complete Coach Jones will have the Silver Knights ready to take on any and all-comers.
At this point. however. the season is up for grabs, several unknowns are ready to prove they can bring it home. Let’s have some good basketball and hope this great December weather continues. I hope that didn’t jinx us.
Wrestling season is also here and, according to Coach Snyder, things are looking up at TCHS. There are some new faces that may just be what is needed. We shall see as the first match will be held tonight at River High School. Best of luck to TCHS wrestlers. Good luck in whatever you are doing and lets stay injury free.
The Silver Knights boys will open up at home on Tuesday the 15th against St. Mary’s, remember to wear black. All students with black will be admitted free. The TCHS girls will be home again on Friday against the Blue Devils of St. Mary’s and again on Monday the 14th. The middle school boys will play their first home game on Thursday, Dec. 17. The next home contest for the girls will be held at 6 p.m. on the 14.The first freshman game will be held on the 15th in conjuction with black out night. The freshman contest will start at 4:30.
Paden City’s girls will be at home on Dec. 14 and 17 against Magnolia and Wood County Christian. The PCHS boys will play an away game on the 15th against Williamstown. Good luck to all area teams from grasshopper to High School. Have a great season.
